Can fighters and tac scramble to defend ships from an allied nation? i.e.: German planes scrambling to protect Italian ships using an Italian air-base?

since Manual talks about ‘friendly units’ I’m guessing the answer is ‘yes’, but I want to confirm it with the experts (those are you guys)

From new A&A Europe Rule Book, reprint and purchased this week.
Page 30, last paragraph under Air Units: Air units can hit submarines only if a friendly destroyer is in the battle.
Page 32, Submarines: Unit Characteristics: Can’t Be Hit by Air Units: When attacking or defending, hits scored by air units can’t be assigned to submarines unless there is a destroyer that is friendly to the air units in the battle.
Page 32, Destroyers: Unit Characteristics: last paragraph … cancels the following characteristics of all enemy submarines in that battle: Surprise Strike, Submersible, and Can’t Be Hit by Air Units. …

You cannot retreat as the defender for any reason.

And submarines / fighters on carriers can do 2 damage under the new Alpha 3 convoy rules. (Under the old, Submarines could do up to 2 to each enemy nation bordering the convoy zone.)

In AAR and AARe it is perfectly likely that Russia will push into Eastern Europe and the Balkans before Germany falls. Especially if they go on the offensive very early in the game.

In classic it is also perfectly likely that Russia could take Ukraine and Eastern Europe (or at least trade E. Europe) before Germany falls and Japan gets to Moscow.

In 1940, it is a bit harder, but I have seen some games where Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Yugoslavia fall, Hungary, W. Poland and S. Germany are traded with Russia. In this one, I am not sure if this is “normal” or not, because the game is so new.

However, in each game I have played (Classic, Revised, Anniversary, 1940, etc) it seems plausible that Russia could press on Germany before Germany or Moscow fall. It really depends on the strategy being used (Turtle in Russia to slow the Germans down, killing them by attrition and stretching their lines vs Attack like mad, ignore Japan, and push as hard on Berlin as possible before losing Moscow to Japan) whether or not Russia can, or does, invade and control significan portions of Europe.

Each unit may be paired with only one other unit in the same turn phase, but it may be paired with a different unit in another turn phase. In Miker49’s example, the tank may be paired with the mechanized infantry in the Combat Move phase, then be paired with the tactical bomber in the Conduct Combat phase. In Jeffdestroyer’s example, the tank may be paired with the mechanized infantry in the Combat Move phase, then be paired with either the mechanized infantry or tactical bomber in the Conduct Combat phase, but not both. See the Combined Arms sidebar on page 16 of the Rulebook.
