Never Played Before, what rules should I use?

I just bought the Gamemaster version off of Craigslist yesterday and I see it comes with second edition rules. After a bit of research I have found that it seems the rules might be a little unbalanced as far as combat and a few other mechanics go. Is there a definitive ruleset I should use with this board? I’m really looking forward to playing this, as the miniatures are awesome, and I am want the best bang for this game. Do you guys have any suggestions on finding the best version of the rules?

A newbie facing the same dilemma. Thanks for letting me know that it is the second generation. But can you please elaborate how that come?
