Here is a devoted thread… branching off the Mario vs. Sonic thread.

This is a preference on brands… so discussion can and will include all past, current and future products by these companies.

My vote… Nintendo. Mostly because I like their flagship titles. XBox is a close second though, because of their good selection and attractive product. I also like their controllers a lot.

  • Play Station!!!

Sony is a big Japanese company.
Microsoft is a big American company.

I trust the Japs more then the US in this.

Anyways on a more serious note.

After round 1 including the PS this is how it goes.

Nintendo had the 64. Sega had the Saturn. Sony had the PS.

The Play Station becomes the best selling system at the time, Sega does terrible. Nintendo sends their system yet!

    Round 2 featuring Sony

The PS2 becomes the best selling system! Sega does okay, but quits with the coming of Xbox. Microsoft does pretty good beating Nintendo, but still had a big difference between Sony. Nintendo released an even worse selling system being ranked 3/4 when before they were 2/3, 1/2, and 1/2

Now Nintendo were smart, but the system sucks! They target 5 year old kids and 60 year old men! Nintendo takes the untrue lead. Sony is chasing Microsoft’s ass as the system is almost done it’s time, the PS3 will last longer and maybe even catch up to the very desperate Nintendo!

    Okay Dylan…

I will say this for Nintendo: The N64 is quickly becoming a classic platform, much like the Sega Dreamcast is for some. It offered some very good games, which are among my personal favorites, and those of many other people besides: Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Donkey Kong 64, Tetris, Zelda, Mario Kart … plus others. I don’t think PlayStation can boast so many popular flagship titles.

The GameCube was not the best system. That seems to be a general consensus. However, I for one enjoyed the system. While it lacked in many titles, due partly to the disc size, it made up for that with what games it did offer. But that is just me. I recognize that a lot of people don’t feel that way.

The Wii is a system I do not personally like, but from what I can tell it has been very popular. Targeting previously unreached age groups is not illegal or dirty… it’s just good business. And props to Nintendo for taking such a gamble and cashing in. I think they just wanted to come up with something different and creative… but it caught on with seniors after the fact. I don’t have the facts on which of the latest systems is the best seller… but it surely cannot be PS3. If nothing else, Sony is not very creative with their systems. Their controllers have been exactly the same for the entirety of PlayStation’s existence (which some may like)… and PS just seems to be following XBox by re-releasing what XBox perfects… like online experience.

  • Are we talking about the past, the present of future of game consoles here? Nintendo is very firmly aside from the motion control on Wii all about the past. Wii’s tech is largely last generation and their biggest games are sequels to Mario and Zelda and a remake of Goldeneye. I don’t see anything really fresh there and the motion control novelty wears off quickly.

Xbox 360 is now and while the  PS3 is also now it is ahead of its time but will soon be pulling ahead. Early reports indicate that the Move motion controller for PS3 is superior to the WiiMote and Xbox 360’s Kinect.

At this point it is largely dependent on what you want out of video games as there is something for everyone but I see the PS3 as being better able to provide that in one system.

Well, my question was based on the premise of the brand… past, present and future. Not just current platforms, although those are included.

I won’t argue that Nintendo has consistently lacked in the newest technology in terms of graphics and performance… and much of their product base is founded on mainstay lineage. That is not indefinitely sustainable, they will have to learn to adapt. I don’t mind having the old titles come up again… but to stay competitive Nintendo will have to adopt more of the mainstay games from the other systems and formulate their new systems to handle them in a way that people like.

There is something out there for everyone. Nintendo works (or has worked) well for me. Partly because I was raised with it. As far as an all around… right now I would have to say it is a duel between PS3 and 360. I have never played on a PS3, so I am ill qualified to comment directly on that system. However, when it comes to gaming aimed at the teen male audience, Nintendo cannot compete with PS3 and 360. It will be interesting to see what they all come up with next. (I really think PlayStation needs a better title than “PS4” … that is getting very old. Soon people are going to be like, " Oh, it was on Play Station2… or maybe it was Play Station 3… I don’t remember exactly, they all sound the same…")

    Nintendo is milking their characters!

    Let’s go to the N64.

Mario 64. Hmm oh yes Mario was introduced in 1981! There’s also a great cartoon show to watch, since I’m tired of playing the same thing :D

Star Fox 64. 1993, hmm how many games are there like this why buy one where your some random fox!

Donkey Kong 64. 1981 Yeah that’s great 3 Donkey Kong country games for the Super NES. Many other random games for the NES and stuff. Hmm an adventure game as a monkey sounds a lot of fun. Where I could be something normal for the Play Station. Another cartoon show! :D

Tetris 1984, Why don’t I just dig up an old game for my gameboy instead of buying it again. Besides it’s a puzzle game.

Zelda 1986, Hmm a sword slasher, I most likely can get something from the Play Station, and not have to be a little elf! Another cartoon show! :D

Mario Kart. We already know about Mario. So I can play a racing game with a real car, but no I’d rather play with a 2 Italians, a monkey, some chick, some green thing, I don’t even know what the hell it is. And some other things.

    Sounds fun! :P

PS2 owns Gamecube plain and simple.

Hmmm the whole X box system was following the Play Station the Play Station systems have been around longer. Why do Sony need to change a controller that all ready works. Now that the Xbox might be taking out some Play Station buyers, but the PS1 and PS2 are still selling better then the Wii, but even though as of right now Microsoft is out selling Sony right now, it had a year start, and the PS3 will stay around as the Xbox will just run out steam, easily, it’s not meant to work, the PS3 will last longer like the other Play Station systems! Look the PS3 will still be selling well while the PS4 is out. The PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360 in Japan. Also the PS3 had the best selling first week and stuff. To be honest I think Nintendo’s cheating, trying to call that thing a system! Microsoft doesn’t even have a hand held system

    Australia and New Zealand
    1. Wii
    2. Xbox 360
    3. PS3
PS3 can easily catch up once the Xbox 360 starts to slow down

    Canada
    1. Wii
    2. PS3
    3. Xbox 360
It show Canadian’s know what their doing

    Japan
    1. Wii
    2. PS3
    3. Xbox 360
The Jap’s are smart people, but the Wii is always going to do better, the Xbox 360 and PS3 is technically having a civil war, of the teenager people letting the PS3 sales not do as good as last time!

    USA
    1. Wii
    2. Xbox 360
    3. PS3
What do you expect from Americans

    Europe
    1. Wii
    2. PS3
    3. Xbox 360
Another victory here for us, forgetting about the wii!

Alright, alright… good points. The polls or ratings you have shown don’t necessarily prove your point, but that’s okay, they were interesting. Where did they come from?

If the PlayStation controller works for people, that’s fine. I can use it and play with it easily enough, and there is something to be said for uniformity in their products… I just don’t think it is particularly creative… or ergonomic on the hands for that matter.

Yeah Nintendo’s mainstays are all animation based… it’s just a fact. I am not condoning or supporting what they are, just that they are popular titles. Like what you want. I hate Zelda, personally, and I thought Mario Kart for the GameCube was totally lame. THough I love it on the 64. I also don’t enjoy reality based car games… so, I don’t really care if it is animated.

If we speak only of the animated ones (like Mario vs. Sonic) animated games, Nintendo does beat out its rivals. Nintendo has: Zelda, Mario and all its derivatives, Star Fox, Donkey Kong etc…
Playstation has: Crash, Sonic, Spyro, Rachet&Clank? etc… I am not sure what else. In this category Nintendo has decidedly more of the market share. That isn’t so for most other categories, so I guess it evens out.

Wii just happened to be new and pseudo-revolutionary before XBox and PlayStation, by doing the motion capture stuff first. It will lose its novelty as all the other brands pick it up too. But, I will link all Nintendo’s continued success (and survival) to the Wii platform and the fan base it has… It is reaching groups that XBox and PlayStation have not targeted at all, while appealling decently to the teen group also. Whatever they did worked well. Even if we don’t care for it as a gaming system, which I do not.

Why would the Play Station need animated characters, they have a few that work, and now need to target teens, people who will spend their time on this! Little kids have so much other things to do, that they can’t always worry about their wii, also parents are buying the wii people their games!

Exactly, but Nintendo before that were going down from the start

    NES was the best
Super NES did the second best
    64 was the third
    Game Cube was the worse!

This is not right, Nintendo aren’t even advertising their maskcots anymore (Mario, Zelda, etc) they are worried just about all this stuff that there targets would like! Nintendo’s maskcot is now the Wii fit! They are way too desprate

Also here’s all time for the consoles (this isn’t updated, but it’s good enough)

    1. PS2-Sony
    2. Play Station-Sony
    3. Wii-Nintendo
    4. NES-Nintendo
    5. SNES-Nintendo
    6. Xbox 360-Microsoft
    7. Genesis-Sega
    8. PS3-Sony
    9. N64-Nintendo
    10.Atari 2600-Atari
    11.Xbox-Microsoft
    12.GameCube-Nintendo
    13.Saturn-Sega
    14.Master System-Sega
    15.Dreamcast-Sega

Also by now the PS3 I think passed the Genesis.

Does it really matter how Nintendo is advertising or who they are selling to? The point is that they are doing well and playing the marketing game cunningly.

And remember, for the most part I am agreeing with you about the Wii; I don’t like it. I am simply defending Nintendo because I believe in their products.

And you still haven’t told me where these lists come from… I mean they look legit and I don’t think you are lying, I’d just like to know.

  • I’ve had a system from every major producer over the years.  They are all good in their own ways.

I primarily use a 360 now because most of my friends do, and I like the online setup and assortment of games.  If I had the money, I’d get a PS3 for the Blu-Ray player, but I feel the 360 has a bit more going for it in its library.  The Wii was cool, but the novelty wore off quickly and the games don’t seem that appealing to me.

That being said, the most fun I’ve had in a long time was in Pictochat on the DS with 3 other people.  It’s not even a game, but it was hilarious.

  • All I know is the Play Station is winning the vote so far!

Also I got the info from many sites.

  • Not a gamer.

My short History of The Console Wars and The Rise and Fall of the Nintendo Empire

Nintendo ruled the waves for many years, Along came Sega but they soon lost their way with poor graphics and an endless release of new systems (before you even bought two games for the last one!).  Nintendo had won the battle…  or so it seemed.  No one cared about SEGA CD / SEGA 32X / SEGA SATURN / SEGA DREAMCAST / SEGA… I just don’t care anymore and have stopped giving you $300 every 6 months… When I can STILL get NEW games for my old SUPER NINTENDO.

A new comer had entered the fray; SONY surprised everyone with PS1 and their more gritty Adult games (MOH was one you remember).  The graphics were more polygon than Nintendo but the content was more mainstream… Blood, Gore, borderline language.  The titles just kept on coming and soon SONY replaced SEGA as the #2 console in the galaxy.

Then came PS2.  The work horse of the Gaming world for more than 5 years!  This was the system that just kept on giving.  It was a DVD player also and it used CDs rather than cartridges (still being used by Nintendo 64).  Nintendo began to lose market share and more and more big name software companies gave SONY exclusive rights to great adult games like GTA and MOH.

Nintendo entered a DARK TIME and tried to compete with the release of the GAME CUBE…  but the Empire had long fallen and the CUBE was found to be to “square” for the new age of gamer.  To make matters worse the software giant MICROSOFT had just ventured out with the XBOX taking more gamers from the once powerful Nintendo.  Nintendo Power magazine which was once a power and voice in the gaming universe with news on the Hottest games was now more of a “remember this great game?” sort of Newsletter.  If it was not for the sideshow market of hand held gaming and the success of NINTENDO DS…  the great giant and once leader of the industry might have perished.

Then came the so called “Next Generation Systems”.  PS3, with built in Blu-ray.  The 7 processor XBOX 360 and its huge XBOX LIVE Network.  These fairly recent comers to the show had become the leaders.  Even SEGA was now just producing Arcade games and polished re-runs for Nintendo!  (Sonic on Nintendo!!!  no!!  iT IS TRUE).  When News of Nintendo’s new system Wii hit, everyone remembered GAME CUBE and scoffed…  even with fond memories of past games and Nintendo glory in thier Childhood…  Nintendo was almost given up for dead…

BUT…  The Wii turned out to be something VERY different from the Mega systems of the Next Gen.  It was interactive, it was fun and it was innovative!  You would find yourself lifted from your old couch (The same one you sat in 20 years ago when you beat Legend of Zelda!) and playing a NEW type of Game.  It had something for everyone, the young, the Old… the Hard Core.  Live action games and rebuilt Classics were somehow different on the Wii and you could play WITH friends.  A sweat could be broken during a sword fight…  A golf swing perfected during an evening…  A few pounds lost after years of sitting and playing PS2.

Soon the Mega systems took notice and tried to copy the innovations.  But Nintendo was once again recognized as an industry leader and innovator in Home Video Game entertainment.  Now the Wii sits beside an XBOX or a PS3 in most homes.  Not in direct competition with the Mega system of your choice…  but something you enjoy with your children, even your parents.  And something that makes you feel like that kid again playing Donkey Kong or Duck Hunt for the very first time.

    Jeremy,

I think this is a very accurate narrative. Dylan will spam us, but I say great job! It is the truth, even if it puts Ninetendo in a good light… But this is how the story goes.

  • I’m not spamming just trying to make you change your mind.

I also love that you call it the Nintendo Empire.

Yeah… sort of like the “Evil Empire”  … Although I wouldn’t say it is an “Evil Empire” because it isn’t like Nintendo has a monopoly on the industry or anything.

In my opinion, the Wii was a brilliant life raft thrown from a sinking ship. It won’t be a novelty in the next generation of systems, so Nintendo will have to get real creative again, or they will have to conform enough to give XBox and PlayStation some competition in the male-shooter category… which is what really fuels the industry of gaming.

To be honest I don’t think that the Xbox 360 is that bad, its that fucking Wii! I don’t even get the purpose! You have a controller you fling around. You think your exercising, but your exercising on a programed electronic that’s really not doing anything! I don’t get the point of it!
