This is an issue that has cropped up in numerous A&A games. The box board photos are often taken by marketing department people who simply want to make the picture look pretty and who aren’t overly concerned about depicting things accurately.

@Brain:
Man I really wish we would get a solid release date on this game, I’m getting tired of waiting and waiting for this.
It has already been decided. The release date is August 24th.
Really I’ll be lucky if I can get a game in before I’m back in school.
I go back to school the day before… :|

It looks as though there’s a red Cross of Lorraine in the middle of the French flag, so the box appears to be showing a Free French flag.

Well, since the Free French were mainly in Africa and that’s the only place French units will be after the first turn…
Does Italy go after or before the UK?

Yeah, “France” in this game will pretty much just be the Free French regardless.
And Italy goes after the UK.

Well, there were Free French in Syria, and who knows, if the dice favors the French, it will take a while for the Axis to take down France, giving more time for the Soviets to prepare the inevitable German-lead invasion.

Its about damn time. May this be the first in a series of revelations about the game we’ll be getting in the next two months.
-
I wouldn’t hold your breath. This is not even on the AAA official website.

Have you opened the box yet and seen the contents within?

Remember where you got it first!
I can not give up my source.
If you gave up your source, then we would not get further info.

Why? Would FMG get in legal trouble for revealing his source?
-
I would not, they on the other hand might?
Im just happy to share.

Thanks, FMG!
It is like looking into the blinding face of God… it represents the destruction of so many of my future hours.

HERE YOU GO!
Can anybody recognize the generals on the box cover?
I see Rommel, Patton, Zhukov… but who is that in the foreground?
Also interesting that the French flag got ‘top billing’… to celebrate France’s debut in the game, I suppose.

Hi guys, I’m new here. I have been viewing your comments and I had to create my own account to fire back…
This box art is rather annoying me. I was hoping for something a little cooler to be honest. I realize that they try to be somewhat representative of the entire war with what they put on the top of the box, but come on… I just think they could have done a bit better, a bit more powerful you know?
First, the French… really? I realize they are new in the game and maybe AH/Mr. Harris would like to advertize that, but why give them so much glory when (a) they did comparatively little in the war itself and (b), as far as I can tell, will do cmparatively little in the game? The only time the French were cool was when they were led by Napoleon… and he wasn’t even French! He was a Corsican!
Personally I think Germany should be better represented. Especially with a flag. Yeah, they were the bad guys and Hitler was a real dirtbag, but this is history we are talking about here… not promoting an ideology. The swastika and German colors were and are distinctive aspects of this war. I have noticed the distinct lack of German representation before (on the other game boxes) and it has always annoyed me. This is history dammit… we don’t need to censor it! Anyone who would oppose this game if it had a Nazi flag somewhere on the cover is simply ignorant. It happened, Hitler was a real guy and he did some real bad stuff, but we should remember that, so that it doesn’t happen again. We shouldn’t be afraid to show it. Don’t glorify it, but show truth for what it is. Unfortunately, this is probably a result of the continuing trend toward maddening political correctness. Mussolini was bad enough too, and he was on the cover of the 2002 first revision. Nobody seems very concerned about Soviet flags on the boxes… granted they were not as obvious about their opression as the Nazis were, but Stalin was almost certainly responsible for many more deaths than Hitler was. Nobody seems to care about that. The Soviet Union was our ally, but never our friend.
I don’t think they need to make German markers into swastikas and you don’t have to put Hitler on the cover, but I think it is historically necessary to have one somewhere on the box. Not because I support National Socialist ideas, but because it is history. Yeah, they don’t even have a German/Iron cross on the box… not even around Rommel’s neck as far as I can tell. (Maybe this is because Rommel wouldn’t necessarily wear it in combat… I am giving them the benefit of the doubt here.) Please Avalon Hill … forget the censorship and portray real history.
Sorry… I had to get that out there. What do you guys think?
As for the rest of the box… I like the generals on the front. You can’t beat Patton and Rommel, perhaps they should have had them dueling in tanks as Patton had wished. It is hard to tell from this picture, but I would assume that the guy up front is General George Marshall. A diplomatic choice I suppose and, while he is important, I think they could have picked someone more directly involved in Europe… someone more recognizable. Like Eisenhower… Montgomery even. I would have gone for Churchill personally… it would go against the Generals theme, but they put FDR on the Pacific box… so why not represent the Brits with a bulldog like Churchill? With a big fat cigar in his mouth… or maybe the picture of him with a Thompson looking like a gangster. Perhaps not that last one… He was on the Anniversary Ed., but then again so was FDR… but at least Churchill is distinctive and important.
Well, there it is. I hope you guys have some thoughts. And I am pleased to join you all in discussing the best boardgame yet created.

Anything with swastikas are banned in Germany, so that would reduce the sales.
-
France did little in the war? After the Battle of France, the Germans had taken 100,000 casualties. The French resistance greatly helped in the D-Day landing, and by the end of thee war, there were over a million French troops fighting in europe.
-
Well that seems logical then (if swastikas are banned in Germany)… unfortunate, but logical. I fgure the reason had to be due to some marketing/sales reason. In this case I understand why they aren’t putting them, but I still find it unfortunate.
As for France… well yes, they did comparatively little. I know that they were important and they did cause the Germans some major problems… and while they may have had over a million fighting by wars end, they were no Britain, no US, no Soviet Union. You did not see French armies and navies doing the heavy lifting. Much of that was because they got knocked out early, and were not able to put up direct resistance afterward. For about three years, during the brunt of the war, they were not an autonomous country or government. That is what I mean by ‘comparatively little’. Not that they did not have important contributions. But as a fighting and producing nation, they were lost in the shadows of their Allies.
-
But as a fighting and producing nation, they were lost in the shadows of their Allies.
Lost in the shadows of their allies?
Let’s take a look at some of the things the French did after their country fell.
-The French fought in Africa, in Sicily, liberated Corsica, fought in Italy, took part in the invasion of Europe and fought through the battles of France and Germany–-from Normandy to Munich.
-At the Battle of Bir Hakeim in North Africa, the Free French held off the forces of Rommel’s Afrika Korps for 16 days, allowing the British 8th Army to re-organize and stall the Axis advance into Egypt at the Battle of El Alamein. They resisted with almost no support from the British and escaped only when they ran out of ammunition. If the Free French hadn’t held on as stubbornly as they did at Bir Hakeim I doubt the British Army would have had time to stop the Axis from blitzing into Egypt.
-Units from the French navy participated in the invasions of Sicily, Italy, Normandy and South France.
-Units of the French navy and merchant marine took part in convoying operations on the Atlantic and Murmansk routes.
-On June 5, 1944, the day before D-Day, over 5,000 Frenchmen of the resistance dynamited railroads in more than 500 strategic places.
-They delayed strategic German troop movements for an average of 48 hours, according to military experts. Those 48 hours were tactically priceless ; they saved an untold number of Allied lives in the Normandy Campaign.
-French resistance groups blew up a series of bridges in southern France and delayed one of the Wehrmacht’s crack units (Das Reich Panzer Division) for twelve days in getting from Bordeaux to Normandy when it would normally take three.
-About 30,000 FF1 troops supported the US Third Army’s VIII Corps in Brittany: they seized and held key spots ; they conducted extensive guerrilla operations behind the German lines.
-25,000 FFI troops protected the south flank of the US Third Army in its daring dash across France: the FFI wiped out German bridgeheads north of the Loire River ; they guarded vital lines of communication; they wiped out pockets of German resistance; they held many towns and cities under orders from Allied command.
-When the US Third Army was approaching the area between Dijon and Troyes from the west, and while the Seventh Army was approaching this sector from the South, it was the FFI who stubbornly blocked the Germans from making a stand and prevented a mass retirement of German troops.
-In Paris, as the Allied armies drew close, several hundred thousand French men and women rose up against the Germans. 50,000 armed men of the resistance fought and beat the Nazi garrison, and occupied the main buildings and administrative offices of Paris. It was only on the last day when Allied troops (French and American) came in to help the FFI forces, and by then the German garrison was ready to surrender. To the French.
-
The allies were the ones who declared war on Germany my friend, thus getting the world involved, Germany certainly did not start ww2 as you so put it. Back on topic though, the box art has always looked cool to me. I think its fine.
