Any one here play ASL or the ASL Starter Kits?
-
Never have, but I have always been interested.
-
I picked up the first Starter Kit and using a scenario tutorial from BGG to go through the first scenario. There is a lot involved in the starter kits and even more in the full ASL. I am going to spend some time in the ASLSKs before I even think of moving to the full game. Another thing is the cost. I found the ASLSK #1 on the net for $18 and is a complete game compared to the ASL 2nd edition rule book for $60-$80 on the net and $70-$125 for the first module, Beyond Valor, that is needed to play the game.

I went through the tutorial for the first scenario in Starter Kit 1 then set the board up for a solo play. Once I started it was like I forgot just about everything that made sense in the tutorial and had to look up a lot of things. By the end of turn 3 I was looking up less things and everything seemed to flow really well. I made some mistakes along the way but that happens even with A&A games at first. I can’t wait to go through the first scenario again so I can get to the tutorial for the 2nd scenario that adds machine guns, flame throwers, and demolition charges. I already bought Starter Kit 2 and the Starter Kit 1 expansion. Starter Kit 3 will be available in the summer according to the publisher and a Starter Kit expansion should be released in the fall that will require all 3 SKs to play. I will be acquiring those as well. This is a fun system and I am enjoying it a lot. Maybe even more than I ever did an Axis and Allies game.

ASL was a popular game when I was growing up and I think it still is today. I used to have Ambush which I think was similar.

I wish that I would have discovered ASL sooner than I did. There is a tournament coming up next month but I think it is for full ASL and I only have 2 starter kits.

Well maybe you should check it out so you will know what to expect for next year.
Have you been to Multiman Publishing site:

Yes I have. I have been in contact with some people here in town that play and will be getting together with the local club leader to play some Starter Kit games and hopefully he will show me how to play with the full set of rules.

Here is some good reading:

Let me know how similar the games are after you check out the rules.

Ok, I skimmed through the ToI rule book. It looks like it incorporates things from several games into one. For example, the tile overlays remind me of Memoir '44, the different ways of firing, fatigue and morale, look like something from V&V, CoH and ASLSK. Overall the game looks really good. I do like the idea of a base with the squad members on it with 1 man = 1 man unlike the chit games where a multi man counter can represent 10 or more on 1 chit. This is something that I might look into getting. I was thinking of getting the full ASL rule book and the Beyond Valor module but I think I will stick with the starter kits from ASL and get a copy of ToI instead.

Make sure that you have some opponents in your area.

No, you did not talk me into it. I have looked at it just about every time that I went to my FLGS. I had my oldest son watch the little advertisement about it on You Tube and asked him if he would play it. He said “Yeah, I will play that.” I had never looked at the rule book until you put the link on here so I guess that is what nudged me to look at it a little more. Since I bought the game, we played a couple quick infantry only fan made scenarios and ended up going to Hobby Lobby and buying some 1/2" foam core, paint, and some model railroad trees to make some 3D terrain. We also used the hedge hogs, sandbags, and razor wire pieces from Memoir '44 to use with Tide of Iron. Those pieces are in the process of being painted. After all of the above is done we will work on painting all of the miniatures for Tide of Iron. The next beginner scenario we will play will be the 2nd part of the fan made scenarios called vehicles. It adds tanks, 1/2 tracks, trucks, and the cards into the game. So far I am liking this game and kind of wish I would have picked it up a couple of years ago when I started to look at it at my FLGS. Also, I will be getting the expansions for Tide of Iron.

There’s a fairly big community online, especially using VASSAL which is very good for ASL.
The only way to really learn the game is head first but against an experienced and willing teacher which you should be able to find online. Think there’s a yahoo group for that too.
Depending on where you live might be tricky to find real opponents.
Brilliant game when you get into though far more complex than anything A&A….i’ve the full rule book and beyond valour but didn’t manage to play enough games before being forced to get a life from my girlfriend.

I found a local group through the Multi Man Publisher website. The local club is called Omaha Beach. We live in Omaha, NE. The guy that I played against is the leader of the club and he has people over occasionally to play ASL and some other games. He has training sessions a couple of weeks before tournaments so people can brush up on their skills. The tournaments are in Sioux City, IA. Once a year they play against a club in Kansas City. I have yet to get into full ASL and as I am writing this I am waiting on Fed Ex to deliver my ASL 2nd Edition Rule book. I hope to order Beyond Valor soon.
