Yes, in the context I was speaking the semi-decent price is in the future, as you were speaking of Risk Anniversary Ed. If AA50 goes out of print for good and rises to crazy prices I don’t think it will be the standard global AA game. Though, with the internet making it all pretty much free anyway (play-by-forum etc.) I could be wrong.

I downloaded that–thanks for the link–and it is the .PDF of the manual for the game. It explains the “Third Edition” rule changes, but isn’t what I’d consider an actual new edition of the rulebook.

If there never was a full rulebook that was included with any print runs of the board game, or available for download/purchase to owners of the board game, that makes it more understandable that the non-CD-ROM-based A&A crowd pretty much universally sticks to Second or Fourth Edition rules.

Also, it would take some creativity with the bits to bring the Marines and Destroyers from Iron Blitz over to the board game. If I were Hasbro, I would’ve prepared a “Third Edition/Iron Blitz Expansion Pack” to sell in stores with a shiny new rulebook, and pieces for the two new unit types, when Iron Blitz came out. But that would’ve required the project as a whole to have been much better-conceived than it actually was, I guess.

(For instance, how incompetent do you have to be to print way, way too few copies of even a poorly executed computer implementation like A&A: Iron Blitz, and never press any fresh CDs even when used copies turn up on eBay for $100-plus? Was there some reason they left money sitting on the table like that?)

If I remember right though there was a reason why Japan didn’t land in Manch I think it was b/c there was a counterattack possible and so GWS choose to go for either SFE and Kwan or all to FIC.

Yes, I tried setting the volume to the lowest setting, but that did not solve the devilry. I have, however, noticed that the games runs at acceptable speeds in single player mode. It’s only in multiplayer that it takes a big shit. Whether I host or just join does not affect that. It is bogged down regardless.

In my opinion USSR taking Manchuria on T1 is practically a death warrant for Russia. Why?

1.) You would almost certainly take heavy losses in INF before you prevail.

2.) Japan will be forced to take back Manchuria on T1. This will indeed slow down Japan’s advance in East Asia for a turn, but the tradeoff is not worth it because…

3.) USSR is forced to either leave the rest of their Eastern territories underdefended, or to commit signifigant forces from the West to shore them up. Either way you’ve weakened USSR far more than the measly 3 IPC gain for 1 turn or the setback of Japan are worth.

CAVEAT:I suppose with careful follow-up planning by all the Allies, the situation could be exploited for a possible edge on Japan. A case in point would be if all the Allies gang up on Japan T1 with concerted attacks, or if the UK wish to place an IC on India. The USSR siezure of Manchuria could then prove valuable to the overall Allied picture. But in general I believe it would be far more useful for USSR, if he/she is feeling aggressive, to hit-and-run Manchuria by scoring 1 or 2 hits & retreating with whatever’s left, than to actually take the territory & set in motion a chain of events that would be detrimental to the Allied cause…

I could have sworn we have always played that way… but now I can’t remember. Was that a common misconception that got clarified by MB and I missed it, or did I just pull that out of thin air in a sleep-deprived haze?

The air units retreating if land units dead…isnt that an AAP rule? I remeber that too…
