Greetings all,
Creating this thread for use in the very near future to share several rules that I have developed to enrich the overall experience of Axis & Allies: Global 1940. While not fully finalized, I consider them sufficiently developed and want to share with the community for anyone interested in playtesting and providing feedback.
This first post is a starter, and will lay out the three principles of design thay I followed in creating these rules. I’ll also include a list of planned rules modules that are meant to be included as a whole, but can be added individually to tailor the level of complexity desired. Full disclosure; these rules have been developed in reference to the BBR 5 map, but could be reworked for an OOB G40 board.
Principles of Design:
In order of priority, I considered the following three principles.
- Playability — Does the rule work within the context and constraints of the game mechanic? It doesn’t matter how good the rule is if it is broken and unusable.
- Accessibility — Is the rule as streamlined and as simple as possible while retaining functionality? Overwrought and excessively complicated rules with high cognitive loads become barriers, not on-ramps.
- Historical Accuracy — Does the rule work in a streamlined way that appropriately reflects the historical context and circumstances of the era? Some abstraction will be essential, but tight rules for the sake of a slick ruleset serve no purpose in enriching the overall playing experience where you are called to “re-fight, not replay” World War 2.
Future Posts will cover the following Modules:
- New and Modified Units & Associated Special Rules/Abilities
- Research & Technology
- Minor Powers
- Neutral Powers
I’m looking forward to sharing what I’ve pulled together thus far!
