I wasn’t planning this but in solo game I’m playing now, I bought a destroyer J4 and then bought one destroyer every single turn after.

I realized a few turns later that the US sub convoy strategy was DOA.

Constantly reading about a destroyer chasing around sub convoys but loading up on destroyers means they will never convoy.

Italy could use a similar strategy but probably would never work unless Germany doing it from Southern France.

According to probability, yes, but in practise, if you really need that territory, I’d go in with atleast 3 inf. Hitting 2 with 3 inf on def is not too uncommon. Hitting 3 is rather unlikely.

On top of that it also depends who will earn from a war of attrition. If I do, I go, no worries. If I don’t, I won’t, unless it’s for clear strategical and tactical purposes (like your opponent not being able to land planes in a stack next to your Capital).

I didn’t think the of the fighters coming from UK (in my limited experience so far, they get used for scramble, defense of UK, and supporting the destroyer in taking out subs or the German battleship. So I’ve only simulated the combat with the UK bomber, the Egypt fleet and the Malta fighter. That obviously makes a difference and makes it much safer. I’d guess with 80% (1 UK fighter) to 95% 2 (UK fighter) odds, most Italy players aren’t going to try to scramble either. The British will lose the carrier and the two fighters after from a German counter but that will take some of the German air out of the game too.

If the Germans make smart attacks turn 1 on the RN it doesn’t make sense to scramble. Now if they get cute and try to do too much then a scramble may be worth it.

Yeah. I wouldn’t use them for a scramble in turn 1 (depending as you say, on the German attacks) but in turn 2.

I have only had a chance to play this a couple of times (and a couple of more times playing around in triplea), but so far I’ve used the fighters to hit surviving subs and/or the battleship near UK in turn 1 and (assuming no sea lion) I have tried to put 3 allied fighters in UK and 3 in Scotland (this means building 1 and moving the Gibraltar fighter up) so that I can rebuild a UK fleet in 109. I figured the German air force could still probably take it out but if they are going barbarossa it was worth it to pull the German airforce West and to take out half of it on turn 2.

He’s talking about just killing the UK fleet in the SZ off India. A suboptimal move in my opinion, stretches Japan really thin and that fleet can’t really be aggressive against much without dying in return. It also makes your cleanup around the Solomons weak. Same with the attack on the Hawaiian SZ, there’s no point for Japan to be throwing its material forward in barely positive trades when Japan excels at keeping a large American fleet at bay when it can consolidate its fleet resources at the Philippines.

There are several good reasons to get an ac instead of a battleship. The first is that Germany already has fighters to land on the AC. So with the AC (plus fighters) you get a defense punch of 10, with a count of 4, compared to the bb’s punch of 4 and count of 2. The second is that you won’t get many bombards out of that battleship unless you are using it in the Baltic. You might get the one bombard when you attack England, but ultimately that one bombard shot is pretty useless compared to 2 fighters (also 20 ipc) that would participate in every round of the battle.

Another reason is acs extend the range of your fighters. Unlike ships, fighters can’t be blocked.

Whether you intend to go for London or go for Moscow, there are better ways to spend that 20 ipcs.

You don’t have to wait a turn to hit Japan. You place them, next turn they’re in SZ 6. You place them in SZ 10, next turn Hawaii, next turn SZ 6.

If you put a NB in Alaska, they can move in 1 turn into SZ 6, via SZ 8 and SZ 7.

When I play Japan I like to play with the long-term in mind. That is, I don’t really go for early do-or-die strategies like an India crush. If I’m given the opportunity, I’ll go for it, but normally I’ll just try to improve Japan’s economy and keep it that way.

On the turn I attack, I grab the Phillipines and as many of the DEI as possible. The rest will be gotten on the next turn. Hong Kong and Malaya are also high-priority objectives. Unless something has gone wrong, getting these will make Japan’s income in around the low-mid 60s, which is perfect.

Then I’ll put 1-2 factories in South East Asia, and just trade Burma with India. With convoying, India can only produce around 1 Infantry a turn, so time is in my favor in that region. I’ll strat bomb the India IC if I ever get the chance.

What determines my success at this point is how much US invested and is continuing to invest in the Pacific. If it’s a majority or all of its resources, I know Japan’s not going to win. I might attack Russia if I see a KJF strat, in order to help Germany win. My fleet builds will primarily be defensive - carriers and destroyers - in order to make my fleet survive as long as possible against the growing US fleet.

If US is only spending some of its income in the Pacific, I’ll be trying to win in the Pacific if possible. After I’ve got my income, I’ll try to place the majority of my fleet in the Carolines. There I can threaten Hawaii and Australia. With luck I’ll try to convoy Australia. I’ll have taken 1 of those four Australian NO islands, so hopefully Anzac’s making less than 10 a turn. With a good Carolines-based threat, Anzac will be building defensively - infantry - for the forseeable future. Thus the majority of my income can go into my trade war against India and for fleet builds to compete with the US fleet. Until India falls, I’ll go mostly for targets of opportunity at this point. Hawaii if possible, but that’s tough. The Pacific Island NO in A3 is impossible, don’t even bother looking at it. The 5/7 NO in A2 was a lot better frankly. :-P

With a long-term strategy like this, Japan’s overall victory threat is maximized.

Thoughts: If the US conquer Caroline Island, they can’t land with planes on it. Perhaps they will be supported by British / Anzac ships. But the whole Japanese fleet can attack them in Sz33. And note: Some of the planes from Kiangsi can reach Sz33 and land on AC, because the planes from Sz35 can land in Palau Island or Marianas. If they move to Sz6, please. The Japanese whole fleet with ALL of their planes will destroy them at J4!

Just wanted to point out an error in logic in this step. Primarily, the United States of America does not need to land planes on the Carolines, Australia has 3 fighters and I highly recommend using those planes. That way you instantly get 3 scrambles if you are ever attacked.

artillery is good, and often underestimated.

Keep in mind though, that in certain situations, when you have tactical bombers closeby, and no fighters, you’ll be happy you have that occasional tank :wink:
