2024 PTV Finals axis-dominion (x+11) vs daaras

thanks for the game, that was an epic and fun one! might be the biggest japan i’ve ever had in any a&a game lol. felt fairly confident until that devastating blow to the german army deep inside russia, and then allies looking very scary having stacked northern italy and starting to squeeze germany… with that my hopes for a global victory were shattered so i had to pivot to mounting a seige on the heavily fortified australia, while also eyeing a possible lunge for hawaii if that proved to be the better option. i knew pivoting would also force america to stop focusing 90% of its attention on europe, as if that continued axis could possibly collapse before i could reach victory in the pac.

so a couple things i was worried about, one was that you might have the russians push from ukraine to join up with the allies in italy, and then drive hard against berlin. not to mention all that expansion of income for the commies by infiltrating europe. instead you pivoted to block the japs from piercing your underbelly there through cauc, which i totally understand the concerns there… second thing was your attacking the german stack in austria. i kinda baited that, wanted to give you some odds there because i felt that i could recover even if it went to average or more, whereas you would lose your substantial leverage over the axis powers in europe… as most of your american forces would get depleted in that battle, and there’d be fewer threats to egypt, ME, turkey, rome, and so on. that that outcome turned out to be better than average for me was a big bonus, and i think what further sealed things. having said all that, i’m not sure if any of that mattered enough as the waves of japanese hoardes were fast closing in on the beseiged allies in sydney.

  • @axis-dominion Yeah, I think I really lost the game when Japan took the middle east. You and I have very similar playstyles and strategies. You are currently ravaging my brother with my patented abandon the pacific strategy. We both seem to believe the best way to play PTV is “Win the Med, then win the game”.

I just took too long to get into the med, and even then it wasn’t enough. Japan was just too big and too strong.

Once we got into the middle of the game I thought my only real way to win was going to be to grind germany into the dust. Which I felt like I was close to doing, but just couldn’t quite get there. The thought with the Austria attack was basically that if I won with average to above average dice, I think the Russians could’ve drove hard for Leningrad and the Nordic money, AND america could’ve sent half the navy or so to Pacific. However, the dice ended up being poor, and I just didn’t have enough.

The issue in reality was that Germany had all of their NO’s, so despite having no threat to Russia, lost all of Balkans, USA in Italy etc, the Germans were still making around 70+. (This just makes me want to go full Kreigsmarine in like every game. You don’t need the Russian money in PTV)

I knew I was losing, and my only real hope was getting a huge battle to swing things in my favor. I thought Austria was my best chance. If I won with like 5+ extra units (which in a battle that huge isnt crazy) it wouldve been an ipc swing of well over 100.

It was a very well played game, and I am going to beat myself up for 2 big mistakes that probably cost me the game, but it was still fun.

Side note. What do you prefer to do as the allies vs the Axis Rock?

i guess my point is, even if you had 5+ extra planes after that battle, you’d have lost just about all your ground forces and hence your main leverage/threats over me. i didn’t mind the tuv loss, even if it was over 100 etc. i think i was well ahead that it wouldn’t matter strategically. what mattered more, strategically, was not being so squeezed and threatened everywhere, as you had great mobility and threat projection with all that force and transports to pivot anywhere in the med quickly.

  • @axis-dominion I definitely understand your point, and if the game were closer (i.e. pacific not being so dreadful) I wouldn’t have sent it. I just think when you’re losing you have to send some riskier attacks. I was definitely hoping for another blessing from Marti lol.

i will say, i think it’s more in the way you “abandoned” the pacific, especially with the early pivoting, that i think just was very inefficient and gave axis too much freedom on both sides

there were also some key details you were missing around things like allowing me to strategically bomb your bases and slow down your movements and threats, that overall contributed to that feeling of taking too long, for example, to get into the med and so on. those kinds of oversights can really have larger strategic ramifications as i think they had in this game

  • @axis-dominion Yeah, I definitely learned a lot. This was the first time I had ever been Axis Rocked. At first I was under the impression that Russia would go nuts, but that was very wrong. I only pivoted to Pacific because I couldn’t kill your Gib navy.

oh i was taking your usage of “axis rocked” as an expression as in you got rocked or punished by the axis. but with your usage here it’s almost like you’re referring to a specific strategy (“the” Axis Rock) and you have it in caps. so i think i may have missed it if it is a specific strategy discussed somewhere?

  • @axis-dominion yeah, The Axis Rock is the axis stacking Gibraltar.
