G40 Self propelled Artillery
-
We have started play testing the Self Propelled Artillery unit.
Self Propelled Artillery units are limited in numbers and can be produced only by specific Nations.
More information will follow soon.

Nice.

We have ended play testing - and the G40 Self propelled Artillery unit rules are now added to the Axis & Allies Global 1940 House Rules Expansion.
Study the Axis & Allies Global 1940 House Rules Expansion thread pg. 1.

All the major protagonists had mobile artillery in one form or another. Is your thought to limit the availability to nations who made the most use of it? We’ve had discussions around these type things, but ultimately decided that the game is a game more than a simulation and so if a player wants to buy one or if the Italian player wants to research jets, they should be allowed to.

Hi Chris,
The intended design of the Self-propelled Artillery unit was to support “fast moving” units that operate alongside Tank & Panzer units - such as Mechanized Infantry etc.
The background for the limitations in production numbers and Nations that can produce SPA is partly based on:
- Play test results (game balance)
- Historical production numbers of SPA compared to the production number of Tank units
- Historical use of SPA
- Ease of Game Play
At this point our play test results - and their use during recent games - show that mostly Germany and the Soviet Union are using the SPA units.
The Soviets most often combine their SPA units with their Soviet Guard Infantry units - either as part of Soviet Army Corps - or as independent units.
Prior to the introduction of SPA units Germany is already familiar with the use of SPA since the German Waffen-SS units include SPA units.
-
This is another great rule - even though the number of SPA is limited. The SPA units can support and move together with German Panzergrenadier, Soviet Guards and US Armored Infantry…awesome

yep this is a nice addition. Only 2 games so far. First game US was the one that used it most in N Afirca with the Armored Inf.
Too weak to hit Europe in force so took the long route :)
One thing about SSR is they get Mass Tanks a turn later and then Total War, so it’s still a better buy to have Tanks.
Also good to have at least 2 or 3 to pair with the Grds though. Right now I’m finding them useful in Centarl Asia in case JPN gets uppity with the NAP :)
