I would wager on Gamerman and Booper in their match against Daaras and FranceNeedsMorePower. And I think we’re in for a rough time against mikawagunichi and Oysteilo, neither of them are slouches here!
And yes, I love the game for what it is, but I think the game was developed with a different focus.
Some of the A&A games are quite well balanced (Anniversary 1942 setup without National Objectives, and 1942 2nd Edition), while others are wildly unbalanced – 1940 Global and 1914. Classic was also heavily Allies-favored, without the Russia rule for round one.
I’m fine with that, I enjoy these games a lot. As a kid I would tinker with the pieces on the Classic map and make up different scenarios for a “WW3” style setup. The flexibility of the game mechanics being commutable to many different versions is a testament to the excellence of its design foundation. I’m more in the tinker & improve camp myself, I have spent countless hours making alternative setups, such as a 1942 setup for PtV and a 1942 setup for YoungGrasshopper’s Tournament edition.

A couple of considerations. I think J1 is really hard to do with the current set up, so that is probably something to consider for future games. It looks like a J1 will leave china for china (with the extra chinese set up power). I have not studied it carefully so I can be wrong
As for bids. Bids depend on so many things and I think maybe the game was not designed for online play with battle calculator? My friend and I never use bid when we play face to face. Instead we use beer and wine. In addition we dont use battle calculator either so all “calculations” are just a best guess. With these limitations it is very possible for the allies to win this game with the OOB set-up

@oysteilo Live play is definitely more “interesting” in that way to me, the lack of battle calcs lets you make more risky decisions (and sometimes miss things that are more of a “sure-shot” than your intuition would tell you)
One of our live Tournament games this past November with my teammate @mikawagunichi came down to a battle for Turkey or Spain, one was 70+% odds and the other was 55/45 for the attacker, the attackers picked the 55/45 without the benefit of a battle calculator
If I hadn’t rolled all misses round one, we might have won that one…haha

I’m a tinkerer myself. As soon as you play test once, all rules look optional. You are right about our opponents being very good and that winning won’t be easy.
