@Curtmungus your honor of being more famous than me is quite deserved. I salute you.

Probably Pearl Harbor since that was a Ben Afleck Love movie designed to get women to buy tickets.
But alas Pearl Harbor is not a war movie. They really don’t make war movies anymore or at least since the 1970’s because it is too expensive and people are not interested in war driven plots.

What war movie or movie about war would you show your girlfriend or wife? <<
Hmm. The best choice that comes to mind is Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. It’s a pretty accurate and sober reconstruction of the Doolittle Raid, but Ted Lawson’s relationship with his wife Ellen is a major subplot. Lawson was one of the bomber pilots on the raid.

Saints and Soldiers
Boy in the striped pajamas
Colditz
Stalag 17
Wife liked them all.

I agree with IL, Pearl Harbor can keep the ‘average woman’s’ attention. Two hour love story for her, a hour war movie on Pearl Harbor for me. Plus, Kate Beckinsale is very easy to watch on the big screen.
I took a woman, on a first date, to watch Pearl Harbor and the night ended very well.
However, taking a woman on a first date, to see the 2001 Planet of the Apes ended with a crashing flaming wreck.

Was it you or her that said:
“Get your hands off me, you damn, dirty ape!”
?
:P

I play a good episode of Crusade in the Pacific
Just so all of you know…the best WW2 documentary other than World at War and Victory In the Pacific is…The Big Battles.
Trust me on this one. Perfect while playing or getting inspiration for house rules.

My wife would watch anything with Paul Rudd or Damien Lewis in it. She “bums” them, whatever that means.
We watch Band of Brothers at least once a year.
Refused to watch Pearl Harbour. Says Ben Affleck sucks. -
Top Gun
-
When I was 18 took a 16 year old American(Florida) to Top Gun. I embarrassed her by laughing when I should not have and generally being childish. I may have made a few lude remarks too. Think I ruined it for her. Oh well!
-
The narration is British since it aired on BBC like in 1962.
-
Galli Polli would be a good idea…Mel Gibson young, classic music by Thomasso Albioni, Adagio in G-moll and no party mouth language in the movie… 8-)

“Pearl Harbor” is a decent choice depending on your gal’s tolerance for mediocre cinema.
“The Best Years of Our Lives” while in the ‘not a war movie’ war movie genre (like much of my list) is a multiple Oscar winner including Best Picture. It is about soldiers coming home from the war. No battles though. But it is a damn fine movie.
“From Here to Eternity” might be an okay choice but again light on the war part.
“In Harm’s Way” is a chick friendlyish war movie.
“Operation Pacific” might also be a reasonable choice.
“Mister Roberts” might work.
“Casablanca” would fit into this list as well.

I had an ex girlfriend that fell asleep and snored during God and Generals.

Did you get up and sit somewhere quieter? Suppose it meant you had an excuse to go see it twice: you could not hear it!

@ABWorsham:
I had an ex girlfriend that fell asleep and snored during God and Generals.
Wife loved it.
When did you know she was a keeper? :-)

@wittman:
We watch Band of Brothers at least once a year.
My wife doesn’t know it, but she loves a lot of war movies. Â She watched the entire series of Band of Brothers with me several years ago. Â I suppose it’s time for us to watch it again.
To the OP, I would recommend trying Band of Brothers.
I have the entire documentary “The World at War” done by the Brits in the 60’s and it’s really good. Â Has personal interviews with a lot of the higher ups, and Hitler’s secretary, and also a lot of ordinary Joes who were in the war - like German citizens who hid Jews. Â But my wife can’t watch it for a minute. Maybe if I made her try it for a half hour, it would catch on….

“In Harm’s Way” is a chick friendlyish war movie.
History buffs who watch “In Harm’s Way” will get a good giggle at seeing the women at the opening party (which takes place on December 6, 1941) wearing 1960s hairdos and dresses.
If someone’s wife or girlfriend likes “In Harm’s Way”, she should also like “Battle Cry”, a US-Marines-in-the-Pacific soap opera about “The men who fought, the women who waited, and the stolen moments they shared.” The DVD has a wonderfully trashy cover: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2710281984/tt0047860

Yea it’s pretty damn good. :)

It’s not a war movie. It’s a zombie movie.
Certainly not a “war movie classic”
