• @The-Janus you are right about destroying the luftwaffe. But losing a fleet on the cheap, especially the UK fleet in the med early on will back fire. If you have 8 ships and Germany can attzck with 8 air units then you have several rounds of combat in which he will pay in fighters.

For now, I also retreat through the Suez and add my Pac fighter/tac Bomb to the carrier. So i can come back in the Med UK2 and construct an airbase in egypt on UK2. A video will follow next week.

I think Cornwallis replied with some good ideas.

I’ll also add that in another thread he said that moving the British fleet into sea zone 93 is another way of baiting the Lufwaffe.

Note that if baiting the Lufwaffe is an objective you should obviously scramble if Germany attacks the fleets in 110 and 111. The trouble is that I’ve seen some Axis players don’t do that and instead just sort of strafe 111 by taking the hits on the battleship and submarines, so they don’t lose any aircraft.

Personally I don’t really put much weight into strategies that require “baiting”, given its unpredictability. The best bet for minimizing the Luftwaffe is to make the Eastern Front so hard that the Germans either need the air force (providing some breathing room for the Western Allies), or that the Axis can’t advance out west.

While I’m not sure how to do this, I feel this might be an easier objective and puzzle to solve.

The move to East Africa is pretty similar to what I usually do.
I tend to use the transport to pick up the tank and an infantry from Alexandria; you can also send in the mech from Egypt and infantry from Sudan, with the tac to get the boost from the tank.
This leaves the tank and the mech 2 spaces from Egypt – the problem is that Egypt is way too weak in the beginning, so pulling units out to deal with East Africa is a losing idea, it seems.

  • @The-Janus indd if you pull one more unit away than i did then italy can take it. Now they can´t.

  • Having not played the Global game yet, is it generally pretty standard practice to have the UK just send all of their ships from the Pacific map over towards the Red Sea (en route to the Mediterranean)?

You do seem to use a lot of stuff from India etc. in this move, which in a Europe-only game the UK would not have at their disposal.

    Hi Janus

I would say usually but not always. Some like to take Sumatra for India and move the DD to Singapore for the block when the BB withdraws.

Other times people smash E Africa, although leaving that for SSR a good idea. Activating Persia and then taking Iraq next turn is another common action.

I’ve seen the BB go to NSW as well. Overall , I would say your assumption is correct the majority of the time but as I’ve said before, I’m not a top tier player :)

When you guys gonna start that multi ? Should be fun to follow :)

  • I think the broader issue is whether the UK can afford to let the Italians into SZ98 completely uncontested. Egypt seems super weak in the early going, and just letting them dump 2 transport loads in for free is going to bury the UK.

USSR is basically a lost cause, so the only thing keeping the Axis from a VC win is UK holding out in Egypt, or a very early D-Day and recapture of Paris.

  • @The-Janus they can dump units in there non the less. But not enough to take it on I1. And now you can retaliate on their fleet and still protect egypt and keep your fighters who can later on fly to moscow.

Normally Uk does the taranto raid in sz98. What italy normally does is go to Alexandria on I1. On G2 germany destroys cheaply the remaining UK ships and fly on to alexandria bolstering the defense. UK on UK2 has then already lost the Med bc she can only send 2 or 3 new ships which italy can kill. And on I2 they can land new units plus air attack on egypt.

With my idea you will keep egypt. Ok italy has other options but they often overstretch so UK can kill them piece by piece.

  • @Cornwallis I see you made a video of are combined strategy, you should share it with the others. The Luftwaffe one I mean.

  • @FranceNeedsMorePower i did. It´s in a new thread here on the forum.

  • @Cornwallis Oh ok. I will check it out.

My sense is that any opportunity to get a shot at the Luftwaffe is worth it. BUT the Allies need to have Italy effectively out of the game ASAP to really be successful, though – and I’m not convinced that can even happen in time to save the USSR.

Perhaps it’s a topic for my other thread, but I’m beginning to disagree more and more with the change in mechanics, where transports no longer have a defense value; navy costs too much, and air power is too effective for the Axis. These interacting factors seem to be what is slanting the game against the Allies.

  • @The-Janus indeed hurting the luftwaffe is a plus but not if it costs you way too much. Keeping your fighters with UK and alive in the Med then they can go to moscow fast.
