WWI 1914 is an under-appreciated A&A game that is one of my favorites. These house rules make a much more historical game while keeping it simple. Feedback is welcome.

@Running-Away Per page 22 of the rulebook, units of another power may be transported only if that power is friendly. Per page 12, the US is not considered to be either friend or enemy to any other power while it remains neutral. Therefore, the US cannot transport units belonging to any other power while it is neutral.

@monsieurmurdoch I am not sure how these house rules would interplay with 40 since the scope of warfare was so different. Hospitals and ambulance customization could. I hope you can find a 1914 game. Keep an eye out. And, I do have some plans for barb wire, trenches, etc. Thanks for the feedback!

@warhawk77 You have probably found a map by now, but in case you’r still looking I thought I would mention this.

Before I managed to get my hands on 1914 I printed this reworked map out, and used 1940 pieces.

The nice thing is even if you do eventually get 1914 you may still prefer to use this map (since Europe has a lot more space on it).

If using the 1914 values ( 2 for Inf, 3 for Artillery and supported Inf), it gives this :
3 Inf x 2 = 6 3 Supported Inf x 3 = 9 3 Art x 3 = 9
(9+9+6) = 24
24 / 6 = 4 hits.
Roll for +/- 10%. We typically call for a minimum variance of one, so you would end up with between 3 and 5 kills.

We round the number before rolling, so in your case, 21 hit points divided by 6 gives 3.5, so we count 4 kills before rolling for +/-.

This makes for low luck games but that +/- 1 or 10% can be the difference sometimes between changing your strategy or staying with it without killing you on one bad roll.

The flu season of 1918 hit a perfect storm of conditions that caused this outbreak to be one of the worst ever in history. 500 million people were hit with the virus (type H1N1), and it ended up killing close to 10% of those infected. No place on the planet was safe, with North America and Europe getting hit the hardest.

In Europe, with the war and a supply of wounded soldiers, malnourished civilians, wet and cold weather conditions, lack of proper medicines, the flu showed no mercy. In fact, research done years later, speculated that this virus variant strain was unusually aggressive and may have caused a condition known as a cytokine storm with the immune system. This causes strong healthy adults to be hit harder by the disease than those with a weakened immune system.

In the game, to handle this event, starting with turn 6 the virus is possible for next 3 turns. Roll 1d6 to see if the flu has come to Europe. The virus is in effect with these rolls; Turn 6, 1 to 3; Turn 7, 1 to 5; Turn 8, 1 to 3.

To show the virus impacts, do the following; This is for Europe and North America ONLY. Not Turkey, Middle East, or Africa.
Roll 1d6 for every territory. 1 thru 3 and the territory is hit.
Remove 10% of infantry units, with 1 removed at a minimum, but only down to a minimum of 1. The IPC value of the 1d6 is lost to the controlling player. USA is 2x the 1d6 roll.

Thanks for the answer.
My idea was more simply a single junior board here in House Rule section, and only for 1914.
(No need to multiply all others because they mostly shared the same basic mechanics. The actual melting pot can do the job if paired with google search tool bar.)

1914 fans should deserved a more focused board for them to keep up their enthusiasm and share their passion and new ideas for this game.

Some ideas:

As I’ve suggested before, a fighter that scores a kill is promoted to an Ace (rolls @3).

Air combat lasts a maximum of 3 rounds, perhaps only 2. Aircraft had very limited fuel capacities.

If, at the end of this time, both sides have fighters remaining then no side gets air supremacy. All planes must land with their ground units, and cannot strafe.

Fighters can pull out of dogfights after any round of combat, attackers choosing first. Planes simply land with their own troops. They cannot fire in the ground combat, but can be taken as casualties.

Only rolls of 1 actually destroy an enemy aircraft. Rolls of 2 (or 3 from Aces) only “force down” the rival fighter, which must land as per pulling out of a fight.

If there is any dispute over which plane shot down an enemy fighter and gets the promotion, a “kill” takes precedence over a “down”. Otherwise, if the owning players cannot agree, then nobody gets the credit.

Multiple mixed fighters should roll individual dice in combat; its handy to have a few dice of different colours to facilitate this.
