I have to ask you to EDIT back in your Russian sub. Chalk it up to the non-intuitive nature of sub rules but I should not have asked you to submerge. The Russian sub submerges, full stop.
An attacking sub is 60/40 win loss against a defending sub.
The Russian sub gets no benefit for fighting to the death.
It attacks the German sub on its turn at 60% as opposed to defending on its own turn at 40%.
The German sub will fight to the death on the Russian turn in order to try to win at 40% and deny the Soviets their IPC. I’ve encountered this before and should have known better. The battle really was always only about the Russian transport only. Even if the German sub had “hit” on the surprise strike, you could just select the transport since casualty selection is sequential and the surprise attack occurs before normal combat. The Russian sub was never under threat and should always submerge.
Play on with the Russian sub and I will fight to the death as the German sub on Russias turn.

I’m guessing the pattern will be for the defending sub to submerge in that part of the board unless something substantial happens

The German sub will fight to the death in an effort to prevent the USSR from gaining the 4IPC therin.
