On games with more importance (playoffs) I make sure to ask what bidding rules will be used before the bid starts. I think my 2 BM playoff games have been with default rules for example.

first time i’m being denied, ever… so i was curious if you ran into this as well.

in any case, he’s denying so it doesn’t matter, but i’d like to understand expectations for things like edits before proceeding, as i tend to be very lenient wrt edits but i think this is one of those situations where i should be explicit with my opponent before proceeding (normally i’m not and haven’t had problems)

I ask if they want to allow it and they said no. Affects bidding slightly.

That’s the point, he’ll say it’s the default but really up to the players to agree on it. Your disagreeing is I guess the first time I’m personally encountering this, making me think we should probably be explicit about everything else before proceeding. I’ve had opponents question it but after explaining that it’s a longstanding convention they always allow it. You even admit it’s something that was common in non-league play. So why disallow it, I mean you know I’d allow you to do it as well right? That should be obvious.

Anyway whatever. Let me know how you approach edits. I allow all edits as long as I haven’t rolled yet, and even if I’ve rolled I’m willing to allow, just ask me and I’ll evaluate. Main thing is of course the edits should not be based on knowing outcome of dice rolled or subsequent decisions/moves made by opponent. So my evaluation is usually based on that. Sometimes dice rolled on one side of board truly have no bearing on an edit request elsewhere, for example. Also I’m usually ok with US edits made after China and UK moves/rolls as long as, again, not influenced by dice outcomes. Which is I think logical and common sense.
