League rules idea: mulligans for patrons

@djensen thank you for the initiative! But I am not at all in favor of re-rolls. It would too much turn the chances towards the re-roller with a dramatic impact especially in decisive battles.

I offer an alternative idea - We can highlight each patron in the rankings board (now an ELO board) in a very attractive way that will be noticed even more than badges.

The highlight (color, bold, sparklies, whatever) will be removed at year end unless the patron re-ups.

and added a signature that calls attention to supporting the site, since Panther told me what a signature is.

I can keep thinking of incentives for patrons, but until you kick me as moderator of the league, being a patron will not affect game play in the league, other than I can allow the bid initiative thing.

If the need is dire enough, I would suggest requiring a bronze badge to play any games in the league. That keeps play fair for all participants.

@gamerman01 I donated to the site after I started playing League and had a game or two completed. I think having an allowance of 3 games in League before requiring a badge could be a good compromise.

I agree that having special in-game benefits for patrons feels like the wrong approach, to me. I do love the idea of having special benefits, however; I think this is a good discussion to have. I do not have any suggestions for perks at this time (the bid initiative is a nice idea)

I wonder if there is a way we could drive some engagement with the League by showcasing one of the title matches on YouTube or something. I followed @crockett36 covering the OOB Championship match . With some added production value, like following with a real board setup in the vein of Young Grasshopper or the YouTube wars guys, it might help spotlight the League play here and reach some curious eyes. Maybe some interviews with the players if they were willing to discuss their thought processes/notes. Or an actual show match if some people are interested in participating.

I wonder why the gold is kind of the cap. There are players who would pay more (probably me included). Definitely a way to tap more funds.

@gamerman01 there is still the possibility to give a tip beyond the 60 bucks. We should not overdo it - some might not be able to afford 100$ or so, thinking of students etc. I think every status should be reachable by everyone.

I tried to YouTube, it failed. I recorded a “show” where I went over the origin story of the site. It took 5 takes. Then I wanted to add some screenshots of the old site; I never got to it. Then I rewatched the video, I was doing something weird with my mouth and the zoom level was too high. <sigh> 🤦‍♂️

• Silver required for playoffs

I could offer a $120/year level but I’m not sure what perks to add beyond what Gold offers. Maybe you can choose 1-2 people to qualify for more league games and playoffs?

Back to this idea.

The new top tier badge could be “Cross” or “Distinguished” or something. I was trying for Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Gold Star originally but apparently there is no Gold Star? The lower tier could be “War” or “Service” to represent that it’s mostly for playing online.

A Distinguished Patron can award 4 Service Patron badges per year. The recipient of the Service Patron badge may upgrade to any higher badge for a 20% discount.

I still like the idea of an in game benefit. The re-roll idea may not have been specific enough. There are many different flavors:

• Re-roll an entire battle (nope; that’s too much)
• Re-roll all of your units for one round of battle (maybe too much)
• Re-roll all of your units of a specific type for one round (still could be a lot)
• Re-roll one die
• Re-roll one die with a minimum number of units requirement. I.e., you cannot use your re-roll in a 3 on 2 battle; can’t use it for AAA guns; can’t use it for strategic bombing; etc.

Also, if you get 4 wins for your first 4 games, you “win” an service badge. It’s kinda like a qualifier. Don’t hit the qualifier, it’s okay, just pay $15 for the year or find a Distinguished Patron to sponsor you.
