So to be clear it wasn’t just this move, but rather a policy of using Italians to take Ottoman territories when it would’ve been better to keep them at the mainland and let the British take those territories to boost their income? Thank you!

Yes.
The British don’t need help over there and can make better use of those IPC. In fact, the British would rather you hold what you got on the west and Italian fronts while they beat down the Ottomans.
Anticipate what will strike Venice. When the Austrians deploy their purchase, imagine 100% of it coming towards Italy and use the Italians and French (usually 3/4 a turn) to build them up in Venice. Keep that TUV swing in your favor by at least 3-6.
