Russian tanks are great if Germany decides to swing down towards the Middle East instead of a straight march to Moscow. They are not going prevent the stackwalk any better than artillery except perhaps if the calculations show that the extra firepower will slow down a critical step like Rostov or Belarus. Hence it could be good to build the tanks on turns 3 or 4, depending on the German DoW. No need for them on Round 1.
Why do people call it Russia instead of the Soviet Union?
-
The Soviet Union is the proper name. Do people just say Russia because it’s shorter?
-
Well, I guess because it was called Russia before 1922.

The game takes place in the 1940s though.

Whilst officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics it was totally dominated by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic which was often referred to Soviet Russia or Russia.
I believe In the 40’s, it was commonly called Russia. I think the game was developed in the 80’s for a western market which still largely used the term Russia.

@superbattleshipyamato I think, as @FlyingBadger stated, people in the West referred to the USSR as “Russia” because Russia was the largest and most dominant of the states that comprised it. However, it’s worth noting that the game itself always uses the proper titles, either “USSR” or “Soviet Union”, using “Russia” to refer only to its capital territory.

Yeah, it’s odd the game refers to it properly but the fans don’t.
