the rest of what you are saying is true of all J3 DOWs. So one is welcome to debate J2 vs J3 but this is a specific J3 opening and I think you would be hard pressed to come up with a better J3.

@ksmckay I see ur point now.
AD positioned the fleet J2 in a way the Allies cannot bring their fleet in position to kill TTs after J3. True, this makes the J3 tough to deal with. I haven’t been confronted with this yet so not sure whether the Allies can give the Axis tough choices by eg putting boats in 54 or 39 or by using blockers.
Also, can Allies build Usa1 in a way they stack 54 and, if being attacked, have a counter?
Assuming usa builds eg 2 subs and maybe a bomber? Just throwing some ideas in. Sounds like an interesting challenge to find an appropriate response to this Japanese opening.

Blockers dont really work because there is so much air power and Japan doesnt have to DOW on all the allies. So if you block with just anzac/UK you can just DOW and on US and just wreck a stacked US fleet with air alone. or if you block with US you can skip the DOW on US and clean up a bunch of ships. Either way it costs a bunch of blockers and doesnt necessarily hinder japan anyway. I dont know the consequences of trading a fleet to a slaughter at the cost of not doing a full DOW so perhaps thats worth donating a portion of the fleet but it seems doubtful.
US builds can only be used to stack 26 which can be blocked with singe DD and allies cant get to 39. everything else wont be able to do anything till J4.
Its by no means the end of the game but it does put Japan into a reliably very strong position. And comes with the benefits of keeping US out of the war in Europe which is nice for them. But it does make India a bit stronger, particularly if they grab Sum. If they get too greedy, it still lets you go for a traditional J2 as the opening for this is identical to a J2 opening.
@jdow didnt get the blockers all quite right but the point is you would have to double block (2 dds each zone from diff powers) to protect a 54 fleet which is a lot to donate or else risk Japan just DOWing on UK/ANZAC or US alone.
