(The fighter coverage on land given by air bases is a really interesting mechanic, great way to use planes to defend across a wider front)
Normally (G40) I wouldnt build a airbase first round, but like you mention its a great way too boost your defense (it can protect 5 territory’s plus a seazone), further more its a great way to increase the reach of the aircrafts so they can go almost anywhere they are needed in the future.

@flyingbadger Scramble to SZ99?
-
Yes, scramble with 3 fighters into sz99
-
@cds Okay. Brits scored 3 hits on first round, what do you want to lose? (TripleA suggests damaging the battleship and losing the cruiser and an Italian fighter).
-
hit on bb, then cruiser and the german fighter
-
@cds Okay, I’m down to the bomber, 2 fighters and tactical bomber against the damaged battleship and 2 fighter. Next round, I’ve scored 2 hits, what do you lose?
-
The 2 fighters
-
@cds Darn, that’s the thing I’m trying to kill. Can’t let that loose.
-
Would you have retreated if I had chosen the battleship first and keeping one fighter at the end?!

@cds Yes, would have liked to have kept more air available for Med/Africa. Although maybe destroying the Italian fighter is the smarter choice?
-
Please point out (after the turn) if I do something particularly stupid as it would be great to get feedback to learn from.
-
I think your attack at Yunnan with CHI forces wasnt very good, because you would never achieve your goal to clear Yunnan, get your bonus, even if you would have followed up with UK PAC.
-
Your attack at sz99 was pretty costly for both sides, but you should have send the AC with your attack, because then I probably wouldnt have scrambled anyway. If I would have scrambled, it would have cost you less then it did now.
-
I also dont think its a very good idea to send your AC into sz99, because if I attack it now with only the sub, you cant really defend against it. Seeing planes cant do anything against a sub without a destroyer present and the only defense you have is the 1
-
-
of the AC itself.
-
Another choice you could have made was to claim Greece in non combat, then your planes on the AC would have had a place to land after it was damaged. You wouldnt be forced to lose planes or kill them first in combat.
-
I prefer to keep the battleship till the end, hope it survives, because its the most expensive unit, but further more it can repair itself in ITA turn. I dont know if it would be smart to retreat, if I had chosen the battleship and kept the fighter, because then I would have also kept the transport.
-
Another thing I have noticed is that you placed your fighters and tact in Burma, you can better keep them in India, because then you can intercept vs a SBR. You can also protect Burma from India, seeing you can scramble into combat, it would be like if they are there.
Also when they are in India, they can use the airbase to get that +1 in movement and help attack in Iraq if necessary. -
@cds Thanks for the guidance, it’s great to be able to get feedback on moves like this.
Yeah, the Yunan attack was intended to set up a UK attack, but was probably too much of gamble. Need to focus on better placement of air.
Thanks for the breaksdown of the SZ99 battle and how better to setup for counters.
