Choosing Casualties in Naval Combat

First time poster, great forum! Here is my question:
Attacker has a mixed force of warships, subs, and planes. Defender has warships and planes, but no destroyer.
According to my interpretation of the rules, any hits scored by planes attacking or defending (without a DD present), must target only either warships or planes, never subs.
As the attacker, I’d like to choose my subs as fodder in this battle, but any hits scored by defending planes must go towards the attacking warships or planes. Is this correct? Or can the attacker select his casualties regardless of where the defending hits are coming from, keeping in mind the defender has no destroyer to target subs. I hope this is clear.
