Also, I can hardly complain about cheese when I’m blocking the entire Allied Atlantic Fleet with a single destroyer, but it still sucks when you overlook, e.g., one sub, and lose your capital as a result. It’s probably my least favorite part of this game – other than just gentlemanly sportsmanship, I’ve never seen any way of setting up more of a balance in Axis & Allies between how comprehensive your mistakes are and how intense the punishments are – you can make a series of huge mistakes all over the board and wind up at a slight disadvantage, or you can overlook one ship once, and wind up at a severe disadvantage. It’s particularly bad in Global because the time investment is so high, so you can see 20+ hours of “work” go down the drain over a mistake that could have been corrected in 30 seconds. Odds are I win this game anyway, but there’s a sort of fussy, paranoid, detail-oriented attitude that’s really useful for winning at Global and that reminds me uncomfortably of real life.

Eh, that came out darker and colder than I would have liked. I have really been enjoying our games, and of course we’ll finish this one properly, and I probably will keep playing in the Global league – all I really wanted to say is that it’s frustrating when you get really big swings in the game based off really small decisions, for either side. Does that ever bother you? Have you found anything that helps?

do you want me to call it. i asked one of the top players if he could help me with what i’m doing wrong and he said he would be glad to. he wooped my but in 1 game about 6 rounds and said i hope you learned something and never played me in another game or even talked to me about what i could do. i’ve made a couple of comments to him and he pretty much told me he was busy. in a nice way though. I am sorry if i wasted your time but i like the game. your the second person that has scolded me in a couple of weeks. i donated top dollars for a very long time. my record is probbly a record amount of loses on here. not sure but i might make this my last year if i cant catch on. just let me no before i go if you want me to give you a win.

Hey, Wayne, there’s no way you suck at this game and that’s totally not what I was trying to say. I was trying to complain about how I was frustrated that I made a mistake and that it was going to cost me! I didn’t mean to add to your troubles, and I certainly wasn’t trying to scold you.
For whatever it’s worth, you haven’t wasted my time at all; I really have enjoyed our games, and if I get diced in India or Hawaii then you could still wind up winning this game, because (I assume) you’ll be able to take both London and Berlin on your next turn. If you do wind up winning, I’d be happy to play a third game with you, and either way, if I’m still in the league in 2020, then I’ll play another game with you in the 2020 league if you like.
I think a lot of the top players around here can be kind of rude – if you think about it, who bothers to become a grandmaster at a game about violence and luck that you play online against faceless opponents? Not people who are really just overflowing with grace and good manners, is my point. I know I’m not the nicest person in the world, and I think some of the people who are better than me at this game (i.e., most of the people in the league) are worse than me at being kind.
If you want strategy advice from me, I honestly would be happy to share my thoughts, for whatever little they’re worth. If not, that’s also perfectly fine. I’m catching up on a couple of things at the office right now, but I’ll finish Japan’s turn in a few hours.

Yeah, I’m in the office on Saturday night – I’m in San Francisco, so it’s 10 pm here. So far this weekend I’ve cooked pancakes with my roommates, invented a new cocktail, pulled some weeds to help protect my lavender bushes, done some yoga, biked around the city, watched the basketball game, played video games with friends, and, of course, played some Axis & Allies with you. Duty does call at odd hours for me sometimes, but it’s not all work and no play.
