Nonno, my dad’s dad, was a pre war volunteer. He was in the army from 1932. He joined up , after being in his parents’ trade, antiques. He was in Abyssinia amd Libya. He was part of Thw CSIR (the 100000 Italians sent to the Ukraine in 41). Fortunately, he was invalided out that winter, with ear problems. He was home in Florence for the Soring of 42 and did not join the newly formed, and  ill equipped, 8Th Army. It would be crushed on the Northern  shoulder of the German 6Th Army in Operation Saturn.
He spent the reminder of the war, avoiding reconsription.  He was 36, when the war ended. He had reached the rank of Corporal. He was a small, wiry,  man, but was a very strong  swimmer and was a Greco/Romano champion wrestler.
He never had a good word to say about the Germans amd witnessed many atrocities.
He married a country girl of 15 in late 42. My dad was born mid August 43, just 4 weeks before the Allies landed at Salerno. They were dangerous times, with Civil War breaking out between te Fascists and Communists.

Glad for your granddad.  The whole Stalingrad battle theater was a waste of human life and gross misuse of a great fighting machine.  Several of my uncles and an aunt served in WWII, but strangely and unfortunately, we never discussed their role or experiences.  My dad went thru boot camp and glider mechanic training but then received a medical discharge.  I was surprised that we had glider mechanics.  My aunt joined as a nurse in Feb 1942 and served in the army air corp in the China, Burma India theater, perhaps with the flying tigers. I just watched the movie The Darkest Hour last night.  I saw the movie Dunkirk last year.  Interesting that 2 WWII movies just came out about Dunkirk.

No. The Subs have to retreat from the battle as well as the Tac.

Correct Colt.  Italian DD means Brit sub can take the hit.  And the only purpose of the battle was to sink the dd.  So you would have retired from the battle regardless, once the DD was sunk.  Terrible dice, 5 Brit dice with attack of 11 all missed and sole defender hits twice.  3 subs miss on second round.  That’s 7 dice with attack of 14 and no hits.  Adam, would you really have scrambled knowing that the subs would take the hits and kill the dd, leaving your ftr to take a hit from the Brit TB?  I’d say be happy with your lucky Italian dice and forgot it.  But then, I’m biased and it’s not my call.
