Hey, I was trying to start a league, not a book club

I guess we could just get djensen to open a new league forum, and see what happens…

Alternately, you could just let teams play in the League, with teams getting a standing just like individual players.

    Sorry darlin.  :P

Anyway, last thing I have to say about books: If you like Ender’s Game, you should read Midshipman’s Hope by Feintuch.

Anyway, I think we should pester djensen for a league forum for teams. :P  I think it would be fun!  Many of us only get to play one or two partner games a year here, not a lot of time to practice tactics!

I’ve pm’d djensen and DM, we’ll see what happens.

Are you still teaming with Frimmel? I wouldn’t mind starting with a nice easy win…

JWW, but he needs to calm down before the holidays.

I can ask if he wants a friendly game 2 on 2 with you and your buddy ol’ pal. wink

Can’t say it will be easy though!

Yeah, I’ve played JWW, he’s pretty good.

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

Yes he is.  He tends to get a bit irate when his battleships couldn’t hit an island multiple times in a row, but who can blame him for that?  I can’t!  Hell, i get irate at my fighters routinely. (my infantry still have a better attack success percentage then my fighters, btw.  Except when paired with artillery!)

I wouldn’t object to a Team League, but I really don’t know how the participation would be or how we would set it up.
But I’ll see what the other Mods think.

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

Why not just set it up like the individual league, but extend the time to post without delay of game warnings to 48 hours?  Highly doubt it would ever be an issue, everyone here seems to post REALLY fast and if there is a late post, most players are willing to accommodate them and/or they have a really good reason (ie: on a pre-announced trip or it’s a holiday, etc)

As to participation, I don’t see that as an obstacle. If only a few teams sign up, it will just be a small league. There’s no loss, it’s not that hard to simply set up a new forum. The work of tallying rankings can be left to the participants.

As to setup, it would be exactly like the current league, just insert the names of teams where you now have individual players.

Maybe we should just set up a child forum for team games as a test bed, and start a league in 2008 if it seems worthwhile.

  • My concerns regarding a 2-on-2 League…

    1.  How to handle when a partner disappears during the season
    2.  How to rank players if they replace their partner mid-season

  • 2007 AAR League

You just rank the teams, not the players. Teams should have names that continue even if the players change. Just like in pro sports.

  • Then what if a player re-surfaces mid season?

We are talking about keeping 2 players intact and active for 12 months.

Based on the Tournament record, that is a heck of a lot to ask.  We have a player change/default/disappearance rate near 25% for Tournament games…

  • 2007 AAR League

I don’t see what harm can be done by trying it and seeing how it plays out.

Let the teams run themselves. If someone disappears, their teammate can replace them. If they come back, it’s their tough luck if their former teammate has moved on.

All I want is a place where I can play team games and find team opponents, and promote more team play.

It can only be good for the site. If a player is committed to a team, they will have a harder time just “disappearing”. An individual player OTOH has no commitments to anybody.

  • Moderator

I don’t know if it would be right to “just replace them”.

Lets say you and I team up to form Team HeavyBombers, but we lose our first two games to go 0-2 and I disappear for a month so you Team up with Jen on Team HeavyBomber and get to 2-2.  But then I come back and join with Switch on Team SuperBattleship b/c his partner left mid year as well and all of a sudden I’m 4-0 b/c Switch and his previous partner were awesome.  We play one game the season end and we win the title b/c we went 5-0 but I only participated in one game with the winning team.

I don’t see how this is fair to you or any other team that played through the entire year.

Also say two players form Team Destroyer and start out bad say 0-3 or 0-4, what is to stop them from saying “uh lets not be partners anymore” and they go out to form new teams with new partners and end up going 4-0.  Who takes ownership of the original name and 0-4 record?
Again say it is you and I, and we agree we suck as a team and don’t really like playing with each other nad I notice U-505 needs a partner cause EM is gone for the summer and you see Switch needs a partner cause Bo is gone, so we mooch off the other guys since I joined Team KillerSubs (U-505’s team) and inherit his and EM’s 6-2 record and you inherit Switch and Bo’s 6-2 and Team Destroyer is left vacant at 0-4.  Obviously Switch or U-505 isn’t going to want to inherit an 0-4 record to join you.

Our point is we need to come up with clear cut rules for joining a team or leaving a team if we even allow that.

As a point of reference we have had 50+ people say that want to play in the 1-1 league, yet about 1/3 have come and gone and have only played maybe 1-3 games.  In a 1-1 league the only person you hurt in getting defaulted is yourself but if someone does that in a 2-2 league you’re really messing up someone else too, and how are two new members of the site who want to join up and play in the league going to be sure the other guy will stick around for 12 months?  And again if one of those guys just disappears why should the other guy be stuck with the 0-3 record?  Who is going to want to join a team that is 0-3 when they can take their chances on forming a new team that is 0-0?

The “Team record” almost has to be associated with the players some how and not just the Team Name.  Otherwise I think people will flip flop teams all year long or look to start new teams with different players if they lose their first couple of games.

And as Switch said it has been hard to get teams to commit for an 8 team single elim tourney that only requires a max of 3 games for 2 teams and 2 games for 4 teams.

Anyway, I think a team league could work, but their are some things that need to be decided before hand otherwise it is going to turn into a trainwreck

    @Ender:

Unless you just want an informal place and you don’t really care about records or stats, and you just want a specific place for team games only??
My impression of a League is more structured with some type of “official” scoring (like the 1-1 League), but this quote makes it seem like you don’t necessarily want that and just want a dedicated child board for Team games??  And then whatever happens from there happens?

  • Indeed.  If you are simply looking for a dedicated child board under the Games category for Team Games, I think we can implement that pretty easily.

If you want a more formal team scoring, etc., we need to work out some potential bugs first.

  • 2007 AAR League

I don’t care too much about the league aspect, I just think people might be more interested then.

Maybe a team should be defined by its members. And instead of having an annual “season” we could just have cumulative stats: Total win/loss, and win/loss in last 10 games.

If someone disappears, you just have to start a new team. And of course if you have a 12-1 record, you can be pretty choosy as to who you let join. If on the other hand you are 1-12, you’ll have a hard time finding a new team mate - you may just have to play solo until you can convince someone that you’ve learned something.

So how about we set up a child board for team games, informal at first, and then if there is enough activity a league might emerge.

Just have a team captain you are almost positive will not go AWOL and allow max two substitutions per annum without disqualification.

I definitely think it would be better to start out informally.

We create the Revised Team Forum and go from there.  Let people play some games, and we can even start a discussion in there to get even more opinions.

Sounds good to me. I note that Gargantua has started the game thread for our team game as a “TEAM LEAGUE” thread - I had nothing to do with this.
