Back in the day when the CD-Rom play was rampant, bid methods were experimented with.

Often times, bids not only were for an IPC amount, but for a number of units.

For example, I might bid $15, 5 units (5 inf) or $15, 2 units (ftr, tank).  You wouldn’t indicate WHAT unit(s) with your bid.  The lower unit count usually won the bid.

This worked a bit better in the 3rd Edition (CD-rom version) since bid amounts were much higher.

Then you might get your $20, 1 unit bid to be accepted… Jen!

inf lib, 2 ipc ger, ipc Jap

  • 8 IPC

1 inf 1 art Libya Frindochina and 1 IPC to Japan, or 1 inf 1 tank to Libya and 1 IPC to Japan.

Transport buy for Japan or Germany isn’t what I prefer.  Two transports at Kwangtung just invite a heavier UK attack; a Baltic transport at Baltic’s London invasion threat can be neutralized by Russian fighters to London.

A Japanese TP/SS in sz37,sz50, or sz60 provide immediate benefits. With a TP, you can invade Hawaii with your sz52 attack and eliminate an extra US fighter, prevent a counterattack on your fleet, and force the US to spend some of it’s income protecting W US. An extra SS somewhere would allow you to divert an extra fighter to China or make the sz52 attack less risky.

The German options are more limited but a SS in sz14 would save you a lost fighter if you don’t kill the sz13 BB in the first round and a TP would make taking Egypt easier and too strong to counterattack.

Or you could but a Sub in Sz 14 and just send it to the Sz 13 battle with however many figs and then send the sz 8 sub to sz 1 and kill the trn

  • 2007 AAR League

if you ever got a 10 bid for fun you could always place a fgt on Norway and hit the UK BB, trn, Russian Sub with 1 german sub, 2 fgts, 1 bmb

That actually is a good idea :-o
But I wonder how often anyone would get Axis with a bid of 10 :|

  • I think it has been pretty well established that if you bid over $9, you WILL get the Allies.

Bids on this site (with no restriction to half saved as cash, and no restriction on number of units per territory) tend to be slightly lower than elsewhere (where $9 is pretty average).  But with and unrestricted bid, $9 IPC could add 3 INF to someplace like West Russia (has anyone ever run a sim of THAT to see how badly it messes up traditional R1 moves?), and thus is not very common.  $7 or $8 seems to be almost the default bids on this site (and $8 is almost the universal bid in League games).

    I just did.  :-D

If you bring everything (12 inf, 2 art, 4 arm, 2 fig) Russia loses about 4 units(more like 3.5).

If you attack Belo with only 1 offensive unit(fig/arm), Russia loses about 4 units. =5 inf, 2 art, 3-4 arm.

If you attack Belo with 2 offensive units, Russia loses about 5 inf. =4 inf, 2 art, 3-4 arm.

Armor figures reflect whether or not you brought the Arch arm(best chance to take) or just fig(s) to Belo.

I have entirely too much time on my hands.

It still amazes me that people are willing to give the Axis $8.

well Soviet player can attack Norway on its turn with
    3 inf, 1 ten, 2 fig
    so…

  • i tried with a sub in SZ 8 against Jen in my first game against her, the sub is even better then the fig, since there is no des present

but she has foreseen it and attacked Norway, so i had 1 fig less and couldn done the attack successfully anymore

well, i would really like to see if we are goin to make it the average winning bid number in league games
so from what you say it would be like 8.5 or slightly less

  • The $9 bid is average for places like the ladder rather than here.

Here it is usually $8 in the League with a number of $5 - $7 bids.

Call it a $7.5 average bid, approximately.

What ever the bid turns out to be, GIVE it all to Japan.

Honestly NPB, the “how” is easy.  You take the bid money, go over to Japan, take his hand, stick the money in his hand, say, “use wisely my son,” turn around, and go back to Germany.  Easy.  :-P

  • Fox, that response was worth a Karma point :-D

Yeah, You pretty much beat me to the punch on that one Fox.

And I am serious about giving it to JPN, even though I have a German Av.

Try thinking globally instead of locally.
