Scramble sz54?
2017 League General Discussion Thread

Interesting - I just received a message from a guy who copied this system for their group, and he said they add .01 to the requirement of the bottom of the tier (in other words, 3.5 or 2.5 stays in the lower tier). Right now we just have 2 players with a combined 12 games (at 5.5, 4.5), so not sure a little tweak like that would make much difference for us. I will evaluate the rankings when forming the rules for the next league year - I’m certainly not going to change horses mid-stream.
Simon you know full well you just raised a tier and caused a huge chain reaction with your extreme 75 games, and this is a big reason why as of today there are 17 players with 8+ games finished that are in tier M or E while only 13 in #1-3
Consider this - “ranked” players are those with 8+ games finished. Players who play more games are more likely to be the more skilled players because they have more experience, and because the better you are at the game, the more you want to play it.
Just look at yourself, Mr. 75 games :) You’ve been improving the more you play the game, and have now risen to tier 1. So it stands to reason that people who have 8+ games for the year would on average be ranked higher - they’re better players on the whole.
-
Actually, I think it’s great that we have 17 “ranked” players in M and E and very few tier 3.
Is there some reason it’s desirable to have an even distribution through the tiers?
I do understand interest in making “M” and “E” rarer, so that it’s a more elite club. After all, if everybody’s getting an “A” in the class, then getting an “A” in the class doesn’t mean anything. If everybody’s a millionaire, then being a millionaire doesn’t mean much. But I’ll put it to you this way - who in the “Master” tier do you believe is not a master of the game, and who in the elite tier do you believe is not really an elite player? I don’t know of any :-)

Thank you for that simon! (I’m sure I’m not the only one who was rooting for you)
I get to bask in the 8th spot until Rubioton, Omega, Gamerman, and/or Gargantua complete the required quota for playoffs

I promise you and everyone else - I am not going to qualify this year :-P
-
Oh, and last year Adam decided not to play in the playoffs, so there’s a good chance you can count him out. And since that last win, you’re actually at #7 right now!! And climbing fast. I can see a Wheatbeer in the championship playoffs!!
You are back with a vengeance, my friend.
-
Most of my open games are tough slogs now, but I’m gonna try.
No matter who goes, they’re gonna be brutal!
-
Always!! You don’t want to be #7 or #8 seed, I know that!

Wanna be FAMOUS?
I have been making some youtube videos and I want to start doing something called Play of the Week.
Here is the first one I did to show off a cool move by Dashofpepper.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pn7cHYpzIc
I am hoping that if I could showcase some slick or unusual moves that come up in league games it might help generate interest from the wider population of axis and allies players who are out there but maybe don;t play online (yet)
Please PM me if you have an especially creative or cool move to show and if I have time I will try and make a video of it. I am particularly interested in ones that may teach newer players some advanced tactics (sub blocks, weird carrier maneuvers, that kind of thing)
Let’s show the world our league players at their best, and hopefully draft some new recruits!

Nice one.
I am not sure if I got it: Why did you start filming the board game and then switched to the tripleA client?
I clearly prefer screen capturing of the triple A client over filming a messy board game:)
the resolution was quite low though, difficult to see something.Regarding the content: Nice spot you have selected. Worth a video, well done :)
-
Thanks JDOW. After that video rendered it came out with poor video resolution and audio quality and I’m not sure why. The other ones were OK. I must have had some setting set wrong maybe I dunno.
The idea of having both the physical board and triplea is that a lot of the people who watch axis & allies videos on youtube are people who play exclusively on the physical board. I am hoping to introduce them to triplea and demonstrate that it is not difficult to play this way.

ok, thanks for the explanation.

I’m actually not clear on how I went up a tier. Someone else must have gone up a tier and raised my PPG. I didn’t post any wins recently.

I think this whole ranking logic is confusing. So If I played someone in January and I won and they were say tier 2 at that time I am gaining extra points in November if they suddenly go up a tier??? Is this correct?

That is correct, and you also gain extra points even if you lost.

I am curious why it is this way? Initially it makes little sense to me, but I am sure gamerman01 or someone else has a perfectly good answer……

The main idea is that you can re-calculate (and make sure it’s correct) anyone’s score at any time.
Every player’s score is based on all their past opponents’ current ranking. Therefore, when someone you played changes tiers, it affects your score. So in other words, for example you can go across Simon’s line of 75 games, and add up the points for his wins and losses against each individual opponent, and come up with the same point total I have. If you don’t, I made an error and please let me know.
If you got a score from playing a game and that score never changed, then we would have no way of checking for errors. The way it’s done, you can verify each and every player’s score at any time and know that it is accurate.
Yes, Simon, any player’s PPG and tier can change based on new information we got on your past opponents, so you may well have raised tiers in between game results that you posted.

Yes. If you didn’t gain extra points, then your score would be unverifiable unless you kept track of what tier each of your opponents was at when you played them.

I didn’t like Gamerman’s system when I first reviewed it. It seemed arbitrary and off balance. BUT… having played with it more, and having a better understanding of it; I have to say I really like it.
He’s done a really good job here; and I’ll tell you why. We have some players who can play 100 games a year, and some players who are lucky to do 5. We’re not a professional league with scheduled opponents and confirmed game amounts. Past systems were based on win % alone; and it was easy to “fake” up your win percentage by obliterating the little guys; We’re a “volunteer” league and as such it makes the task of ranking people in the traditional methods almost impossible.
This system is great because
-It adapts to each and every players skill level, AND availability issues
-It gives players a decent understanding of where they stand skill wise, and who to watch to improve
-It gives a cut and dry standing system for playoff bracketing and history
-It gives people a good idea of who they should play next, so they have a good chance to win
-It’s open to new people at any time, at any skill level, for any amount of games.
-There’s no set schedule of opponents, meaning you can play your friends, your enemies, and also don’t have to worry about getting an “unlucky” schedule of impossible skill opponents.I honestly don’t think there is another way to accomplish all the same goals, without putting significant expectations on the player base - which would drive some people away.
If anyone has improvements I’m all ears?
I’ve been talking with Gman about allowing us/setting up the rules - to record some of our live games as league games.
-
The only real issue I have with the system is the disincentive for those at the top to play more, even amongst themselves. That’s why I’ve suggested adding 1 (or a smaller number if you like) to the number of games in the denominator for the PPG.
