Just quoting the post with the links for convenience.

    My comments -

    • The map itself is beautiful. But it’s a bit much having that 3-D effect on all the writing and labels - just along the borders would be better I think. It’s a neat effect, just don’t get carried away with it. And maybe not in the sea zones

    • Size of the Map: Good. I can see all of Europe and Russia on my 17" screen.

    • I like the unit outlines too, just a few suggestions:

    • Artillery: make it lower-angled, lower profile, with armor in front, to make it look more distinct from the AA gun

    • A bit more of a size difference between the air units - make the tail on the fighter a wee bit smaller and the body and wings a bit skinnier, and add a bit more to the back and wings of the bomber. The end of the bomber looks like a twig. If you traded the back ends of the two air units it would be closer I think, except stretch the bomber out a bit.

    • get rid of whatever’s on the deck of the transport, and either have just one control cabin showing, or two or three solid smoke stacks or something

    • what’s that droopy part on the submarine? I’d maybe lose that too.

I still say, MAKE THE UNITS A DIFFERENT COLOR from the background.  For that matter, make it easier to tell the difference between a German infantry and a British infantry please!

Oh yea, and make it stop posessing my mind!

Jennifer, have you looked at the new map?

The units have solid white outlines, they’ll stand out on anything.

As for telling british and german units apart - You’ll find the krauts in german territory, and the brits in british territory.

Yes, please take a look at the new one.  Given the problems you had seeing the other map, I’m really eager to see if the new one has improved.

As for the other comments on things like bombers and artillery etc, I’ll take a wack at that over the next day or so.

I’ve had no end of problems in TripleA telling apart UK units from USA units (my colour-blindness).  What’s worked very well for me is superimposing a very small nationality emblem on each unit type so you can easily tell a UK bomber from a USA bomber by the emblem.  Haven’t checked out the new Mapview map so I don’t know if this is an issue for you though.

  • I have a bit of an issue. None of the units show up on the new AAR map for me. Any ideas?

I think he hasn’t added the initial setup yet, so there won’t be any units on the map yet.

  • The inital setup hasn’t been placed yet.  I wanted to get a geneal consensus on the map and units sizes because if they got the no-vote then I’d just have to redo the setup anyway.  If someone happens to get the setup in place and wouldn’t mind passing me the mvf file, it’d save me a step.

  • Ok, then my only recommendation is to make the playing pieces 25% larger. Not much but just a little. The reason being that they are currently a little too easy to miss with the mouse on a 1400x1050 screen, or even a 1280x1024 screen.

  • 2007 AAR League

Here’s a .mvf file of the initial setup.

Someone should check this to make sure it’s right.

It would by my utmost pleasure.  I like the idea of past maps, etc.  Just can’t get past the issues I have with it.

Do you happen to have the file?

    Need better directions.

Cant get anything to open with those.

  • 2007 AAR League

You have to have the old version of MapView installed first. Then download those two files, put the exe file in the main folder and the udm file in the usermods folder. Then fire up the new exe and start new game, and choose the AAR- Small map that should show up as an option.

okay, I got the map file with the starting units on it.  Much better.  I can at least see the lion’s share of the map, and the german pieces are blue, much easier to distinguish from British and Russian pieces!

  • 2007 AAR League

I really like the blue german pieces.  It makes me wonder if the colours for the other powers should maybe also be a different colour from their territory.  It makes it much easier to distinguish the units (even with the white background it is still a little difficult).

  • Ah, so much to reply to!

I can increase the “click-regoin” on the units to make them easier to hit with the mouse without increasing the image size.  Would that suffice?

Easy change.  Any recommendations for the colors?

England could be darker brown.  Russia could be purple.  America could be darkger green.  Japan could be bright yellow.  /shrug.  Just some suggestions.  Though, I like this a lot better.

Too bad we can’t get a map that fits on the screen of a wide screen computer. :(

  • I tweaked the colors a bit (available for download now as the same name as before), but will do more tonite.

The problem with darkening all the units up is they start looking close to each other again, so I went the other way on some.  Russia for example is a more muted red-purple as opposed to the dark red from before.  (Please note the effect on the Russian Infantry, I think it helps prevent those lighter-colored units from getting washed out by the white border.

I think that effect would help the US units too.

I did darken the UK units as requested.

Japan is now red (yellow really got washed out by the white border).

I pulled in the Initial Setup (thanks!).

I haven’t adjusted the images or click regions yet.

    Keep that fedback coming!

An icon for current land value would be great.  Also, placing of starting icons for cash on hand in Saudi Arabia would be helpful.

Anyway we can make it easier to line up units?  That big white box with the four arrows makes it hard.  I can adapt, but it would be nicer to have a smaller white box.

Also, and I know this is almost assuredly not possible, anyway we can drag a box around multiple units to move simultaniously?

  • I think the IPC value is printed right on the map?

The initial setup map should include cash on hand, but it doesn’t yet.

I honestly don’t quite know what you mean.  The only big white box with four arrows I know of is the “panning” icon that come up if you hold CTRL while clicking on the map (and is used to pan or scroll the map without using the scroll bars).  But I don’t think that’s what you meant.

Grabbing multiple units is not actually impossible give the current architecture of MapView, it’s just more difficult than I’ve got time in the next week or so to tackle.  A managed to get that tear-off-the-top drag behavior in so who knows, maybe I’ll get mult-drag in easier than anticipated as well.
