Unfortunately, it didn’t get a unique sculpt.  They reused the Japanese bomber, molded in brown.  Apparently they thought that the Japanese Betty more closely resembled an actual Italian bomber than any of the other existing sculpts.

I do not want to enter in a discussion about italian miniatures, it seems that the majority of the players are not interested in this aspect and, furthermore, A&A Anniversary is not a miniature game. So it is ok to use an already available mini.

However also I would like to have a unique sculpt for the Italian bombers. Moreover, it is really unclear to me where they discovered the similarity with the Betty.

The Japanese Betty was a medium bomber with two engine.
The more representative Italian Bomber the Savoia Marchetti SM-79 “Sparviero” (sparrowhawk) was a three engine medium bomber, used for level bombing and also as torpedo bomber. Moreover the SM-79 was really a bad looking airplane, it was knew in Italy as the “Gobbo” (humpbacked) for the layout of the body. For this reason it is similar to the Betty in the same manner that the Ju-88 is similar to the B-17. It was a stubborn airplane, used in several roles and missions.

The Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Airforce) entered the war with a respectable force of bombers so it is obvious that Italy get a Bomber.

If you add 22 IPC for UK you will need to compensate Germany. Thats will upset the set up because the german player has new units to kill zone the Soviets and probably take Archangel, when the game was not designed to allow this to happen.

Plus all units defend 1 higher. Then the axis could take it but with heavy losses. Plus if they do take it the Allies coming to the Med. anyway and could possible take it back. I think the problem is that AA50 is not a detailed enough simulation to include Malta. I think you need a Med. that has more that 3 spaces.

yes defense modifier would help in longer battles but with 2 units the battle is a couple of rounds.

Yes, I just wish convoy zones would have been but in the game in the first place like AAE. That was a great idea to get the Battle of the Atlantic in the game. AA50 should have been AAE and AAP combined with a few modifications. Still looks awesome though. I see IL has come up with a convoy system in his AA50 house rules. I think the simplest way to do it would be to be key sea zones and put control markers in them. If an enemy unit enters it you cover it with your marker. Each convoy could be worth 1 or 2 IPC’s. Depending on what worked better. If you get it back then remove the enemy’s marker.

It is hypocritical that Palin mistakenly calls Africa a country (which is something I’ve heard men I know FROM Africa accidentally do) and gets bashed to hell but when Obama claims that he’s been to “fifty… seven states?” nobody says a word.

Oh well, on topic, I think that there are many areas in the game that are abstracted, so this isn’t a special case or anything.  Personally I get annoyed when designers put fan service (such as making Ottawa a victory city to please the canadians, despite the fact that from a gameplay perspective just about anywhere on the board BUT north america needed victory cities present) over the game itself… I don’t know, maybe it’s just because I see it as a game- just a game.  Not some sort of philosophical/political statement, not a history lesson (although it is nice that it is historical), just a damn game.  Not all people on the forum are able to do that, unfortunately, making a box of cardboard and plastic into something it truly isn’t.  If the soviets capture all of Europe, I’m not going to get all whiny about how oppressed the french will be under this new Soviet regime and how I can’t do anything about it as the UK player, I’m going to say “Sweet, we won!”  Unless playing individual victory conditions of course.   :wink:

Yes.  I placed an IPC track along the outer edge of the board.

That’s a great idea.  Do you have magnets under your control markers so they don’t move around?

Mind posting a copy of your IPC tracking strip for the rest of us, it’s a great idea.

I’m also interested in where you got the cool clamps you use to keep the board together.  It sounds like we’re going to need something like that for the AA50 OOB map.

The IPC track is just something I whipped up with MS Word.  Nothing special.  Just make your own chart and then cut it into long strips.

If you look closely, I actually have a paper copy of the playtest map sandwiched between plexiglass and a piece of hardboard.  Then I just used some clips that are meant to be used on glass cabinet doors.

I do agree that there may be a need to come up with some kind of clips to hold the map sections together but I don’t think that these are applicable.

So Italy really wasn’t a large factor? Did they conquer all of Africa? What were their builds?

Italy built 1 trs and 1 CV and then mostly land units, adding 1 DD later on. Africa wasn’t important, Germany sent a tank down there which manoeuvred to avoid 2 UK infs (landings in West Africa were not done but probably would have been a good idea). Italy was a factor in that it distracted from attacking the Germans and I think a balanced approach by the US and the UK is probably more effective, i.e. landing in both Norway and Algeria, having fleets both in North/baltic sea and West Med, SBR against both Germany and Italy, and this necessitates a lot of US involvement.

For such things as India IC, this is a detail which o/c we just have to try and fail to see if it can be held, more than 4-5 rnds?

In this game there was no India IC, India survived because Japan focused on China and Australia. In an other game an IC was built and defended with the help of some Russian troops but the jury is out on if this really is viable if the Japs really go all-out vs. India. I hope there’s more UK ships to start with since that would make defending a built IC so much easier! We’ll see very shortly when we get the UK set-up.

I think the perfect fleet would be 1 Battleship, 2 Carriers with 4 fighters, 4 cruisers, 4 destroyers, 8 subs and x trannies (depending of what ocean you are in) against an enemy fleet of 2 subs and 6 trannies. This is my kind of numbers, if I am going to attack anybody.

All neutral countries were guilty of helping a country out ok.  Like imperious said history lesson forum go there. If you want house rules go for it i will allow nuetrals to be attacked and give them an ipc value and a certian amount of units inside each territory.

My example Spain they would have : 4 ipc then they would have somthing like 4-10 inf., 3-4 artillery, 2-3 tanks, 1 fighter (maybe 1 bomber but most likely not).

I was just looking over the new AA50 board image and it occured to me how arbitrary the geography is in this game.

Why is the Belgian Congo in this game at all?

Spain is off limits, even though certainly in the realm of possible history/gameplay Spain could have been a major player or battlefield of WWII; a lot more of a possibility than French Eq Africa or the Belgian Congo which are indeed in play.

Certainly Turkey could have been a significant factor in this alternative universe of a game we call Axis & Allies than ever could have would been French West Africa or Rhodesia.

Yet there they are: Belgian Congo, French West Africa, Rhodesia all open for invasion. Spain and Turkey and others are closed off.

This is so ahistorical, we disagree about countless other nuances and rules about being historically deficient. Yet without Spain and Turkey, we are are not even accorded the ability to play out WWII in ways which could have indeed happened a lot more probable than the invasion of the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia by the Nazi war machine.

Why of all the possibilities of the Axis and Allies timeline/universe are these 2 of the more likely ones that could have happend are indeed shut down?

yes its just in interpretation of that map. Things i didn’t like got tossed. I like national colors but made them a bit subdued.

No problems today, seems to load quickly and navigation is good.  If, you did something, its working.  This much better than what I had been experiencing.

Well, I don’t think we can say either way if the game favors one side or the other if the setup is incorrect. Hopefully it is balanced or is close. Hopefully in the true setup India and Australia and Canada have an IC. I doubt it but a man can always dream. If it doesn’t I will try to house rule them in but, that leads to trying to rebalance the game. If of course it was balanced in the first place. Hopefully China’s setup gives them a fighting chance. I don’t want to see Japan able to defeat them in 2 rounds. Being able to beat China should be an endgame scenerio for the Axis. It should play out more like AAP.

The combat system is pretty much like Revised.  There are no random casualties.  The biggest difference is that transports don’t fight in naval battles.  They don’t roll and they can’t be taken as casualties.  They are automatically destroyed if their side loses the fight.

To add to that, putting in an extra DD in SZ15 makes a shitload of difference since Germany is now unable to attack Egypt on G1, making life hard on Italy as you described.

Of course you have all the liberty of the world to guess the correct setup as we don’t know the whole true one, but this change is so big impact on game balance is very substantial.  :wink:

p.s. trust me, if Japan wants, India will fall on J2. Only the Russians can prevent that, but I doubt they can spare the troops.

No we did not. We used the R9 version of the map Bluestroke made. We believe that is the only setup that has some basis, the pictures from GenCon. Any changes to that setup (although we got confirmed there are some) are pure speculation.

And unless you are unlucky, Germany should not push the Egypt attack until the bomber dies too.

I’d say we should ignore that rule from the very first day. It’s a source of bugs
