All air units must have a place to land.  You don’t have to move the AC if none of the ftrs survive but assuming all ftrs survive, each ftr must have a place to land.

Per page 26 of AA50 rulebook under Air units:

In order to demonstrate that an air unit MAY have a safe landing zone, you may assume that all of your attacking rolls will
be hits, and all defending rolls will be misses. You cannot, however, use a planned retreat of any carrier to demonstrate a
possible safe landing zone for any fighter.

This guy named randyjohnwayne on ebay claims he has games with upwards of 20,000 pieces at one time. He sells hundreds of pieces for AA games and hoards the good ones. I chatted with him on the phone before and i got some incredible stories of 1 hour battles just to resolve one freaking battle!

And no i have no idea how his games get to this level of madness. I guess his playing group does not like combat unless they get thousands of pieces.

After further consideration I no longer feel the fighter escort/interceptor rule needs any fine tuning. In my previous posts I expressed the view that the rule nerfed strategic bombing too much but I’ve since changed my mind. After all, bombing raids over inland German targets without escorts was near suicidal, especially during the daylight. It wasn’t until the Allies had deployed long range escort fighters and had outnumbered the defending Luftwaffe aircraft, that the Allies were able to conduct bombing missions without terrible loses. The same is true with the fighter escort/interceptor rule as it stands now and it should stay that way.

Success:  If you roll at least one “6,” you have successfully made a technological breakthrough.  Discard all your researcher tokens and continue to step 3.

Scorched Earth:
The Russian player may decide to, in combonation with normal defense, assign units to scorch earth. The defending units roll to hit normaly, at their attack value instead of defense, allocating hits against the territory itself. For each successful hit reduce the IPC value of the territory by 1 during the next collect income phase.

Example, germany attacks Ukrane with 6 tanks, there are only three defending russian infantry, they stand little chance, so two are assigned to scorch earth……the other defends normaly. They roll a 2 for defense and a 1 and a 5 for scorched earth. The germans lose a tank, and during their collect income phase the Germans only get one for Ukrane instead of two

Crazy idea…but interesting

the peices on the board represent divisions, corps, etc.
Each infantry model on the board probably has about 100 snipers in it. but it consists of maybe 10,000 - 50,000 men total, so the snipers dont have that much of an effect.

Snipers would be a good unit for a stalingrad A&A game, but now your getting into a different area of gaming….tactical gaming.

A&A, Risk, Diplomacy…are strategic games.
Flames of War, A&A Miniatures, Warhammer…are tactical games

Strategic games deal with commanding grand campaigns, where tactical games are more like chess, each piece has a different and unique task. Snipers fill a tactical roll. If bishops are your long range artillery, rooks, the armor, then the knight is a sniper…for example.

I have multiple copies of the game so I feel that Larry Harris/AH/WotC/MB made money off me.  As for AA50 being out of print, I’ll say it again, search your small local hobby store.  There’s one store in HI that still has AAE, AAP, AAR, and the last time I checked AA50 in stock.  This guy has a small store filled with all kinds of board games.  If you put in the effort, you will find it.

As for my self, I still have my 2nd copy of AA50 in it’s original box.  Had the hardest time convincing my wife why I needed 3 copies.

Heck I still remember one of my friends getting AA Classic map hand drawn with the initial setup on regular size paper (in color) and having it laminated so that we could discuss strategy and use it for PBEM.

We’ve come a long way but still as the game gets more complex the longer it takes to setup and play.

It comes down to how well a player can forecast what he wants when it is not his or her turn and what options you have going.

I created those tiles and yes, of course. That’s why I created them after all. Now if only the developers can work out their recent legal woes with Hasbro.

If you’re reading this, then I assume, like me, you love a good game of axis and allies. Throughout the many games I have played with my friends the one thing that was always the worst about playing was having to be the banker, and the banking system in general.  Its very time consuming, takes up more space, and is a messy way to keep track of income.  A while ago I wrote a program that does all the purchasing and income for the game, specifically the 50th anniversary edition, and me and my friends found it to be a great edition to playing.  The program works by having you enter in what you are going to purchase, and then the territories you capture on your turn, and based off this information keeps track of purchases throughout the game and each countries income.  It also automatically does bonuses and calculates in technology benefits. I do see why they didn’t want to complicate the sub rules w/exceptions and what not, sub rules are tough enough. It would have been easy to add transports must be escorted with surface war ships through enemy sub infested waters or they are lost however. This would have pacified some of us.

yes but then you’ll get a chance to shoot down his bombers with something that rolls def at at least 2.  unless you have some bomber on bomber action going on…
