I’ll give AA 50 a second look.

hi all,

i am robin123 on triplea.

given that a ladder is far away, I am looking to organize a tournament. geographically assigned brackets, with quarter finals, semi finals, and finals, all depending on number of participants. 16 player max. all games to be played on triplea.

this will be a single game elimination event with bids for allies. dice, tech, and NOs.

first to bid will be randomly selected by me.

I use the roundel with the 3 axes and bushels instead.  It stands out pretty well from the others, and looks better in my opinion (As well as representing the regime intended).  The coloured roundel with the single axe and bushel is nice too.

And I did notice the mistake on the colours of the one they used as well.  I believe Kreighund also had mentioned this?

In addition, I hate the colour they used for the Italian units.  I prefer to use the British units from revised with the light green to represent the Italians instead, as they stand out better.  I may actually take the AA50 Italians and spray them that same light green, but I’m not sure how paint will stick to that shiny plastic.  May need to use an etching primer first.

Or maybe I’ll wait to see if they use a different colour in AAE40.  Wizards seem to like switching colours from game to game.

Oh, man, it does. When you are reduced to 2-3 territories you cannot trade one and build at the safer one as any other power does. Wait, you cannot trade territories because of no figs past Japan 1 and you cannot replace as any other power. Oh, wait! Japan anyway will kill all or most China J1. OK, at least we can try escape to USSR or Burma with our last inf … oh, wait! There is some odd invisible wall that prevents us escape but japs enter merrily. OK, but at least those Nissan tanks at Manchuria cannot blitz our mountains and non-industrial areas … oh, wait …!

I don’t get your fascination with China. The Chinese were a bit players during the war and they’re represented as such in A&A. I just don’t understand why you go on and on about China being underpowered, restricted, etc., etc.

We used a red marker to paint the tips of some old AA guns to denote rockets. We did it mainly to remember you have rockets. It really sucks when you forget to fire them, it happens every now and again. You could also paint them another color to denote radar.

Theres two more players in our roleplaying group who I plan on introducing A&A to. Though I personally prefer the intensity of a 1v1 battle. I find with 4-5 players there is invariably a weak link who’s lack of understanding of the game is exploited by opponents.

Normally we do not allow announcements of things going on in one thread to be also posted in another. I will allow it this time.

Jumping into this, here was a proposal to a bomb Italy strategy I used against my buddy.

He toyed with the ideal of buying a factory in the Balkans, I would choose Poland for Germany.( He did build a factory in Libya, which could only be bomber for 2 dollars.)

While expensive, Italy or Germany could then build the 1st infantry for 7 dollars , the second and third ones for 4 dollars. (since the max damage on a territory worth 3 is 6).

It still works out to +2 per unit built , but your “start up costs” are cheaper (3 vs 10) If Germany had heavy bombers, using a 3ipc factory would allow you to build 2 heavy bombers a turn for 29 ipcs. (with 3-5 heavy bombers and 2-4 planes on the board, the Atlantic will be empty near your coastlines, and with your starting infantry placed right, Russia will be afraid to move next to them. If the allies do land on your coast, use your next turn to clear their fleet from the board.

You could save “excess” money after you build 3 units, to repair Germany every other turn, or every third turn, for more units.

If you are saving for a big build, then with the little factory, you can place 3 inf a turn for 15 dollars (vs 21 in Germany)  and use the excess money every second or third turn in Germany itself. 21 minus 15 equals 6 dollars saved, paying for the cost of the factory in 3 turns. Just move the AA gun from the damaged German factory to the Poland one during noncombat.

They can bomb you, but you don’t lose any money until you make the repairs, so just think outside the box a bit.
Its not ideal, but it is a work around for an SBR strat.

in order to determine sides, the players will bid for the lowest amount in IPCs they are willing to take the weaker side for. whoever bids the lowest amount (for allies, in the case of AA50) gets to place units up to the value of their bid and before the game begins.

a typical amount for AA50-41 is 5-8 IPCs, most often given to the Brits and placed in Egypt. on Triplea, there is a convention that limits the bid to no more than one unit per territory.

The following straights are added to the game board, unlike canals, a player needs only to control one territory to control naval access to the adjacent sea zones. Submarines and air units may move normally.

Gibraltar – No units may cross the border dividing sea zones 12 and 13 without control of Gibraltar Denmark – No units may enter or exit sea zone 5 without control of Northwest Europe Dardanelles – No sea units, not even subs, may enter or exit sea zone 16 without control of Turkey

I play with this in all my games, alot more fair

1. I find the Coastal Guns rules (Surface Ships ONLY – subs can pass freely. You NEED DDs to restrict the passage of subs.) from AARHE much more useful for Gibraltar and the Channel passage issues.

To pass Gibraltar, Sz 1 to Sz 2 or vice versa, all Axis Surface Ships ONLY are subject to fire from the Fortress Guns at Gibraltar - Hit on a 1 or 2.

To Pass through the narrowest point in the Channel, between Dover and Pas de Calais, all surface ships - either side - are subject to gun emplacements of the other side (that also spent the war firing on each other - yes, they were quite long ranged) - Hit on a 1.
[Note: With Historical Setup you can even re-enact the ‘Channel Dash’ of the BB’s Scharhorst/Gneisenau [http://www.german-navy.de/kriegsmarine/ships/battleships/index.html ] and their accompanying Destroyer escorts.
Set up 1 BB and 1 DD in Sz 7 {1941 Scenario} to re-enact the Dash. For {1942 Scenario} both set up in the Baltic and the BB has a Damage Marker underneath.
To reflect the surprise of the British, the guns only get to fire at the BB’s, not the DDs.  :wink:

Although, while I always play it that way, Allied subs are free to pass through the Kattegat if they survive a Mine Roll [1-3 Sink, 4-6 Pass].  8-)

This works really well when you add the following NO that was curiously omitted from AA50 - and honestly, anyone who believes the NO objectives are biased towards the Axis should look at Italy’s NO.  [The UK & USA just suck up the IPCs with their generous NOs.]
Germany:
•  Gain 5 IPCs if Axis control Baltic [Sz5] - with no Allied naval units present, plus control the following adjacent territories: NW Europe, Germany, Poland, Baltic States, Finland, and Norway.
Allied subs, even Russian, can be real thorns in the Axis side - although at least the German Navy does not just roll over and die so easy anymore, especially with AA Cruisers / Old BBs (incl. captured BB’s/Cruisers fitted out for AA role).  :-D

You could also go further, if anyone plays with the Soviet Baltic Fleet accurately represented as the Eastern Baltic entrance (S of Finland) was also heavily mined by Germany/Finland during the 1st week of the attack from June 41.
[But thats a topic for a future thread. wink

3. Agreed. To do otherwise is just inaccurate as even the Main UK fleet in WW1 lost BBs just entering the Southern end of the Dardanelles.  The turks have the length of the Dardanelles heavily fortified with Forts and Mines.  Certain Suicide for any attempt to pass.  :roll:

So far, I think UK has been my favorite.  I love the challenge of trying to come up with strategies to use and coordinate it’s far-flung pieces and territories to make a final impact on the outcome.  Well-played UK is the key to Allied victory IMHO!

I think the N.O.s should not all be  5 IPC’s  I do not see them as being equal.
Soviet player is the only exception

Maybe a small bonus for having all.

It was just a way to conveniently organize the rules, plus it keeps the resolution of the sea and land battles for each assault together.

Sorry about that…I don’t know what I was thinking when I posted. The dd would obviously cancel the sub’s special abilities.  Thanks for the clarification and reminder.
