I certainly agree on the big gambles part. One of the fun things about this game is you can sort of just PLAY. That big series of gambles sort of takes the ‘pressure’ off. Just go for it.

I figure any time I can roll more dice than the other guy with a good number of escorts is as good as it gets.

Equal his planes with your fighters and you’re about as ahead as you can hope.

I’ve never done it.

I can only see one situation when I might want to consider it.  Buy a carrier with two fighters (or use two of the starting fighters the US gets on their base) and pay one supply token to get that carrier onto the main map at the earliest moment.  I can’t see paying $2 to get anything else into the game early.  But getting $7 + $3 + $3 worth of stuff into the game quickly might be worth a look.  It could save a task force that just invaded New Georgia and took heavy losses in sea zone “I” but the ground units did OK.  Those extra two aircraft might make a big difference next turn if you need the ships to provide fire support to defend the counter attack next turn.

I may just have to look at that.  Turn 1 US takes Guadalcanal, Malaita and Santa Isabel.  Turn 2 US invades New Georgia from sea zone “I” pulling forces from Santa Isabel and Guadalcanal and resupplies Santa Isabel with stuff from Malaita if Japan doesn’t “counter invade” heavy in Santa Isabel from Choiseul.  If somehow the US ships lost many escorts in sea zone “I”, a rapid deployed carrier in “I” or “J” might keep the US navy afloat.

One more thing …

The opening turn would be a single round attack by the Japanese with a 5 damaging ships and a 4 or less killing a ship; and air and ground units are killed on a four or less.  The Allies damage a ship on a 2 and kill a ship on a 1.  Air and ground units are killed on a 1.

This is my starting thought on a first turn Japanese advantage.

Lets see if that can survive some play testing.

I think the rules are pretty clear that you can only attack enemy airfields.  See page 16.

i have chance to buy GC for twenty bucks, brand new.  is it worth it?  i have never played GC.  played pacific, europe, and d-day, enjoyed them all, till AA50 came out.  AA50 is all  i play now.  so should i buy GC for $20, if nothing else but for the pieces?

Any A&A boardgame is a bargain at $20. I’ve had a lot of fun with Guadalcanal.

No tanks though as far as ‘pieces farm’ goes.

No, it’s not specifically in the rules.  It’s just implied by the fact that the damaged area is on the back side of the card, away from the main sea zone area.  This is more pronounced on the Japanese card than on the American one.  Do you think this needs to be added to the FAQ?  This is the first time it’s ever come up.

A specific update for this is probably not necessary but as part of a bigger FAQ update it probably wouldn’t hurt.

Hello All!

My friend and I have been playing with the rules to try to make it more realistic/historical.  With the battleships, we’ve changed the damage process a little bit.  We still have the first hit ignore rule unless you roll a 2.  If you do, the next hit to sink can be either a 1 or a 2.

What do you guys think of this?  We seem to like it pretty well.

I don’t have BOTB,  but I did buy AAG for my son and we enjoy it.

I would be surprised if most folks in this forum did not say AAG is better.  I definately think it is worth the cost.  It is a much different game from AAR, AAP or AA50.  As a matter of fact, we joke about AAG that to learn how to play it, you have to forget how to play the other AA games.  Happy rolling.  BTW, if you are interested in enhancing your AA experience, check out the Field Marshall Games company where you may buy custom AA dice.  You may find more info in the “Variants” forum here at A&A Org.

I watched a part of a Guadacanal History Channel presentation last night and it really makes you want to go right out there and buy the game.

It dosen’t seem like there is much enthusiam for this option. As for fighter escort protection it depends on ones preference for choice pickings or massed rolls. In pacific the choice is between rolls of 2 or  less vs  4 or less.

The alternating move of units of the same type is a really neat aspect of this game. It always feels like it is your turn to me. You never really feel like you’re just waiting around.
